ok so I got a g4 500 out of warranty and the backlight brightness is faulty.

After using for a while the screen goes dark, pushing down on the frame, stroking it gently and various other things makes it come back but looks a little embarrsing in public. I want it fixed and hoping it was just a loose connection took it down to the local dealer. Apparantly its a faulty board within the screen that controls the brightness of the backlight, as its built into the screen fixing it means throwing away the perfectly good current one and getting a new one for 700.

Wondering if anyone whos ever taken one of these apart and seen inside it know if this is right, is this the only way to get it fixed, is there no way to just replace the faulty bit?

The screen does come apart. You might want to try locating a smashed LCD and determining if you can move the board from one to the other. You could probably get a smashed powerbook cheap if you knew where to look. There's on place that sells recycled Apple goodies, but I forget where now .

The problem is that the backlight power cable has been pinched. I had this happen on my daughters iBook it is real common problem with iBooks. You can replace the cable. I contacted Smalldog and purchased the cable for the iBook for 20 dollars. I had to take the whole lap top apart to do it. Its an easy fix took 4 hours total time.
