How I got my iPod...

- The night before it started, I found out about the Newest Round of Monopoly at McDonalds.
- - - Each Large and Super-size fry had what is Called a Best Buy buck on it. They each had a code to enter the numbers online.

- I decided then and there that I was gonna collect these. See how many I could get.

- - Then I realized I could... dig in the trash... and find some.

- I did so for the extent of the promotion, ending up stopping @ 3 or 4 Mcdonalds Mon-Thurs, and the one in my town Fri-Sun.

- I collected 297 of them, each valued @ one buck.

- I realised I also had quite a bit of change, about 98 bucks. I also had a Rebate check from Staples, and a bunch of cans to take for recycleing, and for 26 or so dollars from that.

- It took a LONG time to type in all those codes.
I now have a 20 GB iPod, real sweet.

-Owl

Damn! Nice work!

I was actually thinking of doing a similar thing with the free iTunes songs from Pepsi. I am the furthest thing from a Pepsi drinker, so I was thinking I'd collect cans from work and by "other means".

I'll be doing the same thing. My whole family drinks Pepsi but hates Apple so I figure I'll be getting a lot of bottle caps from them alone.

Ditto here. I'll be digging through the bottle bags at work for pepsi caps when I get back from Family Medical Leave. Everyone at work hates Apple.

Ignorance, plain old ignorance.

Comments I hear at work:
"They make Apple computers?"
"There's no software for Apple's"
"They are incompatible"
"They are slow"

Then I show them my 3 year old PowerBook (Pismo) and I hear:

"COOL! I didn't know you could do that with a computer. How do I do that with my Windows ME computer?"

It is quite annoying.

excellent. **** mcdonalds AND best buy. they expect that most people will throw that stuff out, not show the dedication it would take to enter all that crap into the computer and all that.

the ends justified the means, for sure.

I'm impressed. That's freaking awesome. I hadn't thought of that, but now I'm on the prowl for discarded Pepsi bottles. And McDonalds game pieces.

Can you imagine what your arteries would look like if had to actually eat 297 orders of fries?

Some guy on SomethingAwful.com's forums dug through the trash at his college for Snapple caps, and he won their grand prize, a crazy guitar.

Mad props for all that work.

Thanks!

And I was expecting a lot of people to bash me for the trash digging.

I justify it this way: the stuff was never that old, not moldy or smelly or anything. The worst was maybe hitting a bit of ketchup.

And I was only asked to stop in one of the 5 McDonalds I visited. In everyone at least one time I was asked if I had lost something, and I would reply "no" and continue digging. They would just walk away
