WOO HOO! After only working for the company for 3 months I have been awarded a raise (from 9.00/hr to 9.40/hr) in my pay. Now it's not as thought they doubled my pay, but for a job that in my opinion already pays well, getting a raise so soon speaks volumes I think.

It's always nice to get a raise. Don't you work at Best Buy?

An electronics specialist at Target can easily make $13/hr.

I worked at Best Buy last summer and they gave me a $1 raise after 3 months. That was a major bump considering... I think I was making around $10 an hour for nights and weekends...
Crazy!

I work for the local school system and I've averaged a dollar a year for the past 10 years.

Nope, I'm just a regular sales grunt and service tech. Starting pay at BB is $9/hr. Every 90 days (3 months) you are reviewed. Each of these reviews are a chance for a pay increase.
This is done by having the managers getting toghether and critiquing you in five different areas. Each of these things IMHO are pretty basic things that any employee of any buisness can do and maintain. As such promotions and advancedments can happen pretty easily if you stick with it long enough. For example, I recieved a perfect review in each area, so not only do I get a raise, it also puts me near the top of the list for becoming full time, when a full time postion opens up (which will be soon as I understand it).

I was just a sales guy... they liked me and said I could come back any time. [I was doing it part time... I have a regular job where I make "real" money.
The reason they gave me the major bump was...
1) My exit interviews were AMAZING... I took the job personally, and really wanted to help everyone I came in to contact with.
2) I showed up on time, and left on time. I would stay when they asked me and never questioned my bosses (even if they were younger then I was) but at the same time would NEVER lie to the customer.
3) I dressed in clean clothes and wore underarm deterrent, cologne and brushed my teeth and would chew gum after lunch (many didn't)
4) I gave honest recommendations. My big line was "If I had $300 to spend, I would get this $200 camera, the program and a few accessories."
5) I also always said and meant "If you have any problems with the camera, PLEASE stop in and either I or one of the other guys here will help you. (and I meant it)
I had this one guy that was a total jerk to me... but I did my sales thing... tried to sell the service (he wasn't having it)... and he started to get rude with me... After getting the camera, I said, "You know what... why don't you buy it, and bring it back over here, and I'll show you how to use it (we were slow that night).
He did, and I talked about how you focus (hold the button in 1/2 way etc.) and how to look at the photos... started laughing a bit etc.
He ended up getting the service and about $100 in other stuff (card reader, little tripod, extra memory, etc.)
They gave him an exit interview and he said that I was the best associate that he had ever worked with and that he will be looking for me personally when he returns... and he also said that he only came in to price check against our competitor.

The main guy blatantly said "I'll pay you $38,000 a year to work here, plus overtime..."
I obviously said no, but I was amazed that you could even make that...
My coworker spent 5 years in federal prison and will probably be making that amount soon.
