I have had 2 kernal panics in the last 5 hours, should I be concerned? What is the cause and or what can I do to stop this from happening?

Without giving more info (say the logs) the chances of any help is going to minimal at best.

My guess, bad RAM!

I have been using the same ram for about 3 months no troubles, what i have changed is i added an external Lacie 250GB drive and did a clean install of tiger and then used the apple migration assistant to move all my file and apps over form my old internal drive in my powerbook 17".

I also started using my PB17 in dual screen mode with a Dell 24" wide screen, would that have anything to do with it, or could it be the migration from my old drive thats the problem, I guess i should do another clean install and then reinstall all my apps one by one and move my files myself?

Open up your Console Application and look at the panic.log in the /Library/Logs.

Hopefully your computer has written something to this log at the time of the crash to help you narrow down the problem.

Also look for a thread started by Detrius who gives a fantastic explanation on the different types of crashes.

What have you got hooked up via firewire? The Lacie?

My guess the Lacie is not placing nice. Were you doing anything relating to FW at the time of each crash?

The Lacie is hooked up to the FW 800 port and my iSight is hooked up to the FW 400 port, both have been connected like that for a few days since i did the migration, it seems to only panic when i leave the machine sitting for an hour or more, not doing anything, then when i come back i see a panic on the screen. both times it happened when i left my desk, its never happened while i was sitting using it, could it be a sleep function of the Lacie or the PB17 trying to sleep its drive or?

From memory the Lacie goes to sleep after about 5-10 minutes of activity. If you run a few trials where you isolate the peripherals one at a time you maybe able to identify which is causing the panic, and then someone with more knowledge can tell you how to actually fix it!!!

This really looks like the lacie from the backtrace. I think Tiger has a bug in the external disk drivers (called IOSCSIArchitectureModelFamily, but they run firewire as well as SCSI) because Apple's own message boards are full of similar problems. Try plugging it into the firewire 400 port and see if it's any better. Or run a little script to touch a file every minute and stop it from sleeping.

I have an external CD writer which was fully supported under Panther, but causes a kernel panic on startup under Tiger. Let's hope this is fixed in 10.4.3.

Barney.

Barney,

Would connecting via USB still cause this issue if it is the Lacie and it is the driver?

This is another reason for me not to upgrade to Tiger (I have a Lacie drive). Just call me The Spaz.

OK, I shall try the Firewire 400 connection also and see if that triggers a panic. Gosh I hope its not the Lacie, I was hoping to boot from this all the time, cause its 7200rpm/8mb/250Gb, which is much faster then my internal 60Gb drive in my powerbook....

If I remember right, USB uses the same "Architecture Model" as ATAPI/IDE, so doesn't depend on IOSCSIArchitectureModelFamily. If the LaCie has a USB 2.0 connection, this would be well worth trying. Trouble is, you can't boot off USB (as far as I know).

Sorry about the spelling, it is not my strongest point

So this could not be a issue with my migration of my files from my old drive to the Lacie, as I was considering doing a complete re-install of everything to see if that settles things down.

I used a generic firewire case and put a maxtor IDE drive in it. No kernel panics under Tiger.

What makes me laugh at threads like this is when I think about Apple's 'no more blue screens' advertising. No, ours are black and white.

If you are not booting the drive, usb should be fine. I hear you don't get as good transfer rates with usb2 though. That 480Mbps tag is a little deceiving. Plus usb uses some CPU.

I wanted to use the Lacie as my boot drive, so I can use my PB17 in clamshell mode and keep the heat out, as using the internal drive gets very hot sometimes, since booting from the Lacie its nice and cool, even with the screen closed.

I wanted to use FW 800 for speed...

I have swapped the FW800 for a FW400 cable, re-installed Tiger and all my apps one by one, and so far so good, lets hope its sans panics now. Will update everyone in a few days of use.

All seems to be working fine now, I even changed back to the FW800 cable, as I wanted to use my iSight, and I have only 1 FW400 port on either the Lacie drive and PB17. Fingers crossed now more KernEL panics

In a few updates Tiger will be more stable with things, but I still prefer Panther over Tiger, call me weird.

Did the re-install fix your problem? Is the LaCie OK?
I have a new LaCie FW800/400 and its the only drive on a 733mhz that is having the same probelms.
This started as a clean drive and 10.4.2 was installed. It worked for 4 days. Now the panic's come ever few hours if I am not doing any thing.

Firstly, have you looked at the panic log? Can you see if it a Firewire problem or something else? If its a Firewire, try using only FW400, not FW800 to boot from, or it could be something software related. Did you migrate all your apps and folders over from another drive? I did this first off and i think this was the cuase of most of my troubles, so I did a clean install on the Lacie and install one app at a time and then manualy transfered my files over. All works like a charm now, no kernel panics again.

OK, I do not have any fix for you, but I have to say that I am having the same issue : when I boot off my external LaCie d2 250 GB FireWire, I get frequent kernel panics, and I get none when booting off my internal Seagate. I have a Mac mini BTW. The issue began after one month (that wasn't long ago), after I updated Toast 7 to 7.0.1 and burned a DVD (ripped with MacTheRipper). I did a clean Install of everything including my apps , w/out using the migration assistant, when I first got my drive. I want to avoid reinstalling from scratch since I haven't enpugh removable media to backup, let's say, a third of the files I have now, and can't afford to buy more now.

I'll keep watching this thread for any possible solution and keep you posted if I find a fix...
