I had my iMac asleep overnight as usual, and woke it up this morning and heard a strange repeating noise, it sounded sort of like the SuperDrive spinning over and over, but didn't seem to be coming from that part of the computer. I held the power button to shutdown, and now when I turn it on, all I get is the black screen and the white "sleep" light on the front, even though I hear it so I know it's on. What's going on here?! I hope it's something silly, but I'm worried...

It could be the fans spinning up. I think the fan is what I hear spin up right after waking.

I had my first full on crash last night while playing World of Warcraft. I performed a few tasks in town (talking to people, rearranging action buttons, jumping, etc) and the system froze completely. I would imagine it was a program issue as it has never done this before.

However, the silver lining was that I recognized the crash, hard reset and powered back up and back into the game within 1.5 minutes. My party members didn't even realize I was gone.

So even though it crashed on me, it made up for it ten fold. I love this machine!

Sounds like it to me. If it can't even show a sad Mac, then either there's some trouble on the motherboard or the display died. The good news is that it's still under warranty even if you didn't get AppleCare.

I am about to call Apple. I get nothing but a black screen. I'm hoping just the display died and not my HD because I would likely lose data (SuperDuper! isn't universal binary yet, leaving me vulnerable and the Backup.app was giving me problems).

I do have an external cinema display, but it's black, too. And I can tell you the sound I heard at first was NOT fans, it was something else. But I only heard that when I first turned it on.

I kind of doubt it's the hard drive. In my experience, a dead hard drive will generally just give you a sad Mac startup screen; it shouldn't completely stop the computer from turning on at all.

Man, what terrible day for me! Called Apple support, got a guy I could barely understand who couldn't help me. I didn't think of the memory/didn't realize it could cause this problem, so I packed it all up and then lugged the huge thing through the mall to the Apple Store, where the Genius Bar kid figured it was the memory and tightened it. He layed it face down on the table WITH NO PAD and had done it before I realized/could say anything. Damn, they need to be more careful — there's already one scratch on that side from that.

Problem is.....it isn't theirs, it's just a job. In other words....they don't really care, unfortunately.
