Chavez deadline for US preachers

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4705740.stm

Wow, this is like the best thing ever. I'm a tolerant person and all. But I regard missionaries as perhaps the most evil people around. Here in Africa they almost outnumber the tourists. Humanitarian work is one thing.... converting people is quite another. I'm just happy to see that someone is finally doing something about it! Even if it is the US's bad guy of the month!

As a side note. I recall when learning about Canadian history how the Heron people used to torture the Jesuit missionaries who were trying to convert them. Ripped out their fingernails if I recall...

That may well be the case, but in addition to bibles, missionaries also come armed with food, medicine, and technical expertise in fields like farming, irrigation, and creating clean drinking water. It's the poorest that will suffer (purely supposition on my part, I have no idea what role these missionaries play in Venezuela specifically) so that Chavez and his ilk can thumb their noses at the US. Good for him

No one is completely tolerant, get over it. What bugs me is the hypocrites who say: "you should be more tolerant". My response is: "I'll follow your example of not being tolerant of my beliefs."

The magnificent South Park episode "Starvin' Marvin in Space" covered this issue in some detail I remember. JESUS = FOOD being an important part of the missionaries' message to the hungry Ethiopians...

You look at the issue from an American perspective only. Don't.

There are two different systems here. America has a rather pure capitalistic system where charity takes care of the poor. Venezuela has a socialist system where the state takes care of the poor. Both systems have pros and cons, but both are valid options. The American people have decided for the capitalistic system, the Venezuelan people for the socialistic one. Chávez is implementing this decision as consequently as America is implementing theirs. The poor are not going to suffer as there are national programs to take care of them (Plan Bolivar or whatever).

There is nothing "evil" about other countries going different courses. And they don't do it to "thumb their noses at the US". They do it because they believe for them it's the better way. So let them.

Sounds to me like the article was only speaking of one american missionary group. It didn't say anything about kicking all american missionaries out of Venezuela.

You gotta tame the beast before you let it out of its cage.

Yeah. Those were good times...

No kidding, I do not totally disagree with ThinkInsane, as some missionay groups do provide help. Unfortunately, the Jesus=Food equation is a factor, and in some instances, some missionaries are real manipulators.

I have seen some of them with their theatrical work of persuasion. People who are not educated or living in despair are easy preys for a conversion based on the fear of getting in Hell and the hope to be savd from misery.

After the CIA tried to overthrow his government and kill his people, how could he even trust US preachers?

Git them out of there.

My memories of Africa.
People fornicating between buildings, in the back og pick up trucks, on the busses and in the local bars right there on the tables.
Kinda reminded my of New York. But with lots more dirt.

oh please, sky captain.... spare us your filthy, racist comments - which are totally OT btw.

as for the NTM preachers, they use criminal methods (armed manhunts, kidnappings, imprisonment, etc.) to forcibly convert indigenous people and force them into settlements, camps or reservations, completely change their way of life, and integrate them into market economy by introducing money, US-American consumer goods and cash crops.

Good for him. Reminds me of that aweful movie "At the end of a spear" or whatever it is. Gods I hate missionaries.
