And a very happy Christmas to you too Icy.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.

I spent 20 minutes scraping my car off last night so I could get a Flying Burrito. But it was worth it.

Meh,

while the wife and I would like to move somewhere warmer in the coming years. Florida my not be on our short list.

I read too many issues with being over-populated and the resources unable to accomodate such a booming population. The water supply was what I've been reading about and how the droughts this year really caused a lot of problems.

Then there's the hurricanes.

If its good for you, great but I prefer Northeast at the moment. To each his own.

It's warm again up here in Atlanta. It got really chilly for a while there but that didn't last. More than likely will get cold again in January. Maybe we'll get a little snow.

Bah! I love shoveling snow. Anything up to two feet is a total blast. Here's why.
  • You get all bundled up in your favorite winter gear--I love my ragg-wool glittens (glove mittens) and an old watch cap.
  • Then you go outside and that first brisk blast of cold air hits you and enlivens your senses.
  • Then it's time to fire up a pipe with a good, stinky "outdoor" tobacco--something like straight burley or virginia, or maybe something Turkish--the kind you can't smoke too much of indoors.
  • Then you start the shoveling. The technique and approach to clearing the sidewalks and/or drive is totally dependent on the quantity and type of snow. It's like a little mental puzzle.
  • After a few minutes you start to get a feel for how the clearing is going to happen--straight to the edge/curb or piled in one area--and then you settle into a steady rhythm of scoop, lift (I prefer the mixed underhand-overhand style) and toss.
  • Eventually you start to warm up and then a few buttons come un-done on the outer wear--while you pause for a moment to survey the scene--and then it's back to shoveling: scoop, lift, toss.
  • Once it is all done you can put away the shovel and stand back to admire one's handiwork. Then you go back into the house for the best part of the whole experience, warm hot chocolate made with cocoa and milk.
Really, what's not to like about shoveling snow?!?
One should never stop striving for clarity of thought and precision of expression.
I would prefer my humanity sullied with the tarnish of science rather than the gloss of religion.

The physical labor and the lack of choice as to when you get to do it.

That was rhetorical, wasn't it?

Exactly.

I hate shoveling. Fortunately, I haven't had to do it yet this winter even though we've had snow on the ground for over a week now (still getting warm enough in the sun to melt it off the road and sidewalk).

In all honesty, the only time I mind shoveling snow is when its just enough to stay long enough to pose a sidewalk hazard but not enough to last more than a day or two.

I likes my snow en masse.

Bah. I'm gonna buy a snowblower when they go on sale. Yeah, it's good exercise, but sometimes you just don't have the time, and all you have time for is the last step... the hot chocolate.

Any advice peoples? I just need a small snowblower, but not too small, and preferably electric.

P.S. I was looking up snowblower images on Goooooogle, and this is what popped up on the very first search page.

Oh yes, thats definitely the best part! I'm looking forward to when we get snow, but usually it won't be before January/February.

I think it's much more fun, to live in a place where the seasons are changing

Florida should create 'Retiree Appreciation Day' as a state holiday. Either that or 'Crotchety Old ****er Day'.

Ha. Going from San Francisco to Minnesota for college I quickly learned to always check the actual forcast before going outside in the winter. When the temperature can vary from 30° to -20° on a regular basis there's definitely a lot of fine-tuning to do with your wardrobe. At one point I actually had specific combinations of outer-ware that I rated for different temperature ranges, the -20° and below one was basically all of them put together.

You wouldn't have to stave it off if you started wearing pants before you walked outside.

For some reason I imagine a closet with post it notes on items of clothing, categorizing your system for quick use.

While I generally do not like winter/the cold. I do like shoveling.

Anything that gives me a work out is something I enjoy, but then I go to a gym 6 days a week.

We've had some snow here already, I was actually taken by suprise when it came and had to change the oil in the snowblower for the season before running it. It was about four inches or so, the temperature's been above freezing a bit since then but all the snow has not melted.

We're supposed to get more snow tomorrow, I ordered new snow tires for my car recently and decided to put them on tonight instead of waiting for the weekend....
