I hope this doesn't constitute spam.

Under the category of macNerd makes good, I finally got an honest to goodness web site (well, web page actually. The rest of the site comes next) running for a real person. It's technically moronic, no bells, no whistles, no rotating Flash fades but hey, it works so what the heck.

I haven't been visiting here at all for the last few months as I've been trying to finally get my butt/career in gear but since I was back in the developer's forum looking for a little help I thought I'd stop by here and submit myself to your usual scorn, derision, etc.

check it out and be gentle to me: Chris Claremont Official Site. Comics, projects, appearances.

Its a nice layout, looks like you have decent content to work with, which makes things easier.

The slice command in Photoshop does not equal web design .

It is an interesting and dynamic design though. Don't give up, it takes lots of work to get good and get a feel for how things are done.

Ouch. Thats nearly as mean as : I think its pretty good. But then people say that I have no taste.

Is the customer happy with it? Thats what counts.

welcome to 2003

edit. sorry that was über unhelpful.

Pare it back, impose some visual order. Let the fantastic art shine out much much more. Don't bury it under the layout and other clutter.

Gotta love Chris Claremont, fantastic comics writer. The man helped define the medium in the modern era.

The web page seems a little cluttered. But, I understand what you're going for, you're trying to catch the feel of a comic page. Try removing some of the borders, they detract from the artwork.

From a usability standpoint, I have no idea what is clickable...

I like it, with only two provisos: I really, really don’t like the main font on the page (the one that “Chris Claremont” is written in), and I do agree with besson3c that the clickable areas aren’t very clearly demarcated. The former is most certainly a case of personal taste (so can probably be discounted on that alone), but the latter does impact usability somewhat. I think if you made links more obviously links, the design would be much stronger overall. Overall, though, it is really quite good.

Edit: I just became a Senior User with this post. I rule.

Take this for what its worth. I'm on my iPhone, so I can't check the page source.

If this guy is a comic writer, why not make the page look like a comic book page? You could have characters announcing updates from within a comic book scene (CSS float text into the speech bubble). The layout should reflect a comic's layout- do some research. maybe have a defined layout as 4 posts on the front page, each looking like a torn-out comic page, full-width stacked vertically. Keep a simple nav bar at the top, outside of the comic strips (so they're easily distinguished as clickable)

I think step one is to scrap the 1990s windows-issue font. Have this guy write his name comic style and you can digitize it to use as the header.

OwlBoy is right to be harsh. This site (er, page) is about half a step up from just making the whole thing a single image and skipping the "website" aspect entirely. It doesn't flow, it's not even close to accessible, and I didn't measure it but it's probably way more bandwidth-intensive than it needs to be.

It's a nice design for a PDF or poster or something, but not for a website. Or rather, this design could be a website with a lot of work (and acceptance of the fact that you don't and can't properly have pixel-perfect control of people's displays), but right now it's nothing but a giant, clickable image.

Given the subject matter, I think it's a decent first draft. It's somewhat evocative of a comic book page. Maybe go a little further with that once you get more content.
