That's it. My brain is about to implode from having to look at teenagers babble on about crap which is neither interesting or amusing.

So, how to turn off the comments on YouTube? Not for videos which I've upped, but for everyone else's videos.
There used to be an option for this but I can't find it since the recent makeover.

Uncle Doof, if you're using safari, download the extension "shut up" by Ricky Romero.

Shut Up — based on the shutup.css custom user stylesheet by Steven Frank — lets you hide and show the comments section on many popular websites.
The button to toggle "shut up" on and off, gets put by the address bar, and looks like a light.

Good thinking. But I'm on 10.4.11, so can't install Safari 5, which is required for those extensions.

However... if it's based on a custom stylesheet then I should be able to make one to do the same job.

Cheers.

Ah, YouTube comments. A special brand of stupid. And the problem is not just in English. The same stupidity infects Greek, Spanish, and German comments, as well. And probably other languages I can't speak either.

All YouTube comments the world over are actually written in a special language called F**kwit. In a similar fashion to newspeak it is deliberately crafted to make it impossible to construct sensible arguments. Such comments, written in F**kwit are know as F**kwittery.

YouTube automatically translates f**kwittery into your native language, in a TARDIS stylee.

So … when I write a YouTube comment, am I actually typing in F**kwit, or does YouTube first process all comments, translating them into F**kwit, and then do an on-the-fly translation back into your native language (except for comments that appear to be written in Foreign, of course)?

Yeah, so? Are blue roses now supposed to be worth less than white roses? Now who’s being racist?

Nah. It’s too well-spelt, and there’s not nearly enough profanity and swearwords.

Yes. Probably. Or Not.

Anyway STFU. My friends dad, who works for NASA, says you're obviously photoshopped.

Not universally.

YouTube really does have its own brand of belligerently malignant stupid.

I wasn't trying to be ironic. I'm talking about the comments on random sites like CNN, my local newspaper, DIGG, etc...

Some places are way better than others, but the overall level of idiocy displayed in online comments is frightening. Who are these people?

Seriously, go to CNN.com, click on ANY story and read the first 10 comments.

A random sampling of stories on the US CNN site reveals quite a bit of Teh Dumb, but not NEARLY as viciously moronic as any YouTube video I've ever come across (that had more than, say, 1,000 hits, natch).
