Hi folks - I have a question for you all. I'm a UNIX guy at the core of it all, and I'm not really well-equipped to solve Mac OS 9 problems.
My uncle recently purchased a new iBook (on the recommendation of my brother and myself). I went through the process of configuring control panels and extension sets with him last night.
We removed the Logitech MouseWare control panel that came with his Optical WheelMouse and replaced it with USB Overdrive, which is the only system file that I can remember deleting.
However, later that evening, his machine began booting very slowly. It appears to hang at the desktop for a while before allowing any user actions to occur.
Does anyone have any thoughts about why this could be, and any possible solutions? Thanks very much for any help you can provide.
Here's the text of the e-mail he sent me describing the problem:
<STRONG>I am a bit a a loss as to why the boot up is taking so long now though. Any ideas on why that could be, it's very frustrating.
This is what seems to be happening.
Start machine and it runs through its normal bootup process, the desktop
comes up, shows you all of the icons, the same way you seen things come up
yesterday, but it hangs there for almost 5 minutes before you can do
anything. If you click on anything during this time nothing happens and
then "beep" all the things you clicked on start opening up.
It's as if it is hanging up for something to load, then the USB overdrive
message comes up and after that it seems like things run fine.
Any insight into what may be happening would be greatly appreciated.
