when virtual memory is on, does the machine use the hard drive solely for memory? or does it use the physical RAM until it needs to resort to the hard drive a la RAMdoubler?

I know it uses physical memory in a combination with HD space. I'm not sure exactly what the combination is, but it definitely uses physical memory.
