Okay,

Under OS/9 is there a way to increase the amount of characters allowed in a filename? This would be extremely helpful for MP3 naming. If there is, please let me know.

Sorry, but the longest filename the Mac OS 9 Finder supports is 31 characters.

I read somewhere that, beginning with Mac OS 8.5, the OS itself has supported filenames up to 255 characters. Apple just never updated the Finder to do so...

HFS+ allows file names up to 255 characters. OS X uses all of them, you really can name files with up to 255 character names.

The Classic Mac OS does not (yet?) recognize the extra characters, and may chop them off if you look at a long-name file. A future revision (OS 9.1) may change that, or may not.

If you must have longer names, get OS X Public Beta and try it out.
