Am I the only one who looks back on the idea of Michael J. Fox being skateboard dude and finds it a bit silly?
I recall buying into it at the time though.

Skateboarding kids in the early '80s were a very different phenomenon from skateboarding kids in the '90s and today.

Without having finally figured out how to auto-lace, I fail to see the point of releasing these shoes.

Well, as a counter-example, it only seems about half as silly to think of Christan Slater as a badass.

I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Not when you compare him to...
- Christian Slater in Gleaming the Cube
- David Spade in Police Academy 4
- That chick in Tom Petty's "Free Falling" music video.

I missed that one, but looking at the summary, I think I'm glad I did. Conceptually though, the idea of Slater passing for a skater dude doesn't seem way out there.
Likewise, Heathers doesn't seem ridiculous, but Winona Ryder as Spock's mom freaks me the **** out.

Kirstie Alley as a Vulcan, period, seems totally bizarre today.

I feel that way about most of her pre-Cheers work.
Wow. Shelly Long was out of her mind.

It looks like Nike is still working on the power-lace version.
Bob Gale: Nike has been thinking about this for quite some time. They came out with those other shoes a couple years ago that were sort of like these, and at that time, [producers] Bob Zemeckis, Frank Marshall and I were approached by Nike saying what they wanted to do was see if they could develop the actual shoe from "Back to the Future Part II." They expected to do various versions building up to 2015. They would make sure it was all to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
MTV: Why now? Why not five years ago or 2015?
Gale: Nike wanted to do this in tiers. This is the beginning.
MTV: So if this year's shoes don't have the auto laces, future years' might?
Gale: Yes! It's not 2015 yet. It's only 2011!

Auto laces exist. Search YouTube. The technology is here. They just have to make the gear apparatus smaller and then it'll fit in the back of the shoe nicely.
But here's the funny thing. A better solution could very well be no laces at all. There's plenty of nice, laceless shoes out there. Geoxx comes to mind.
