G4/400
320 MB RAM
OS 9.0.4

This machine has many problems. But the latest persisting one is the sound not working. The chime will sound at startup but then no other sounds will work unless the PRAM is zapped. Here is the record I have on file for this machine:

06/18/2001 - Merry muted the machine 6/15/01. Was not able to get sound back Monday morning. Rich deleted Sound Preference and went back into Sound Control Panel. Deleted preference again and restarted machine. This didnt work as well. Restarted with extensions off. Sound then worked. Restarted machine with all extensions on and was able to get get sound to work. - OK.

06/19/2001 - Sound not present after startup. Restarted with extensions off. Sound was present. Restarted again allowing extensions to load and sound was there.

06/20/2001 - Sound problem same as 6/18 and 19. Zapped the PRAM. Appears to be working.

06/25/2001 - Machine shut down at startup. Also sound was not present. Merry had to restart with extensions off, then restart with them on for sound to be present. Kirk at Computer Hardware has been contacted. He will contact Apple engineer that has been consulting on startup problem.

06/26/2001 - Sound problem - restarted with extnesions off, then restarted with extensions on and sound was present.

06/27/2001 - Sound problem - restarted with extnesions off, then restarted with extensions on and sound was present.

06/28/2001 - Sound came up when computer was started in the morning.

06/29/2001 - Sound problem again. Booted from NUM and ran NUM (see above). Sound did not work when booted from NUM disk. Repairs were made, HD was defragmented. Machine was restarted and sound would not come back until the restart w/o extensions the restart w extension. John LaRocca checked the sound input and made adjustments. Will check Monday if that solves the problem.

07/02/2001 - Machine shut down at startup and sound problem ocurred this morning. Contacted Kirk at Computer Hardware Inc. Waiting for response from Apple rep on what needs to be done.

07/03/2001 - Same problem as 7/2. Contacted Kirk at Computer Hardware Inc. It was suggested that a different USB keyboard be hooked up to the machine before the machine is shut down Tuesday. Then start up from that different keyboard Thursday morning. John will look into extra keyboard to do this.

07/10/2001 - USB Keyboard to an old BW G3 was installed on Merrys machine. Started up G4 without any problem and sound was present. Shut down and restarted in afternoon. Came up fine. Shut down and had machine waiting for Retrospect backeup.

07/11/2001 - Merry came back from vacation and started up machine without any problem and with sound. - WILL MONITOR

7/23/2001 - Sound did not come up at startup. Sound was fine when extensions were off but did not come back after restart which it typically had done.

7/24/2001 - Sound did not come up at startup. Machine was restarted with extensions off. Sound was present. Re-installed sound components from OS 9.0.4 Install CD. Restarted, sound is now present. Restarted - ok, Shut down - ok, Restarted two more time and had no problems - OK

07/26/2001 - Machine started up fine with sound present. - OK

07/31/2001 - Sound did not come up at startup. Restarted with extensions off, sound was then present. Restarted with extensions on and sound is now present. Contacted Kirk Higgins at Computer Hardware Inc.

08/02/2001 - John LaRocca opened machine up. Wire to speaker was loose. Also wire connection to board was loose. When holding down the wire and starting up the sound was fine. If not holding down sound did not work. John will solder the connections together.

09/24/2001 - Sound problem. Merry tried starting up with extensions off. Did not work. Richard deleted Sound Preference, restarted and rebuilt desktop. Did not work. Zapped PRAM and restarted. Sound did work. - WILL MONITOR

09/27/2001 - Sound problem. Deleted sound preference, checked speaker cable, zapped PRAM. Is working. Between August 2nd and September 24 there had not been any problem with this machines sound. Will contact Kirk Higgins if problem persists - WILL MONITOR

09/28/2001 - Sound did not come up. Contacted Kirk at Computer Hardware. Zapped PRAM, deleted sound preference. Sound is now working for the time being. Waiting for information from Kirk / Apple.

As mentioned in my notes there was a period for a month and a half where this problem did not happen. I have asked many times if something has changed. A program, a file, anything. Nothing.

Our Authorized Apple Repair Representative has stated that Apple has been stating their normal answer - erase the HD and re-install the system. At the present time it is not optimal to bring this machine down due to a sound problem due to our production schedule. So for the time being I am Zapping the PRAM and getting the sound back.

Anyone had this happen to them?

Any tips, tricks, ideas or suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance!

Try the latest version of the Apple Audio Extension. There was a similar problem with a different cause occurring for users who installed Firmware 4.19 under Mac OS 9.1. Upgrading the AAE fixed those.
