I'm running 8.6 but am having problems and would like to re-install the system. All I have is an 8.5 cd. Are there dangers to downgrading? Is there a recommended process?

It's possible your problems are related to the one serious bug in 8.6.

Did you download the Apple Font Manager 1.0 update - and did you run the
Font First Aid included in that download?

If not, that could be the reason for your problems.
