ResEdit the System File picture and replace it with whatever one you want.
Go to the PICT resource, and find the correct picture. Open it and paste over... simple as that.
The progress bar will appear over it ![](http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/smile.gif)
If you need better instructions just ask.

Actually, the picture you want to place instead should be the exact same size as the original.

And what about the little "Happy Mac" that appears just after booting my iMac DV+? Is that picture in the OpenFirmware? Is there any way of modifying it? It seems a bit odd to me, that in the days of the G4 we still look at a Mac Classic when starting up (even if it's in color nowadays)...

Actually, that "Happy Mac" is pretty useful. Juat be glad that its never been useful to you cause if your RAM or logic card was sick, it wouldn't be happy. Instead, it would frown (and then give you an error message). If your system folder was messed up, it would flash a system folder icon...
Besides, its been there for 16 years. I say keep it. They shoudl flash that screen when booting OS X! Just for fun ![](http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/smile.gif) .

I know that, but why can't it be a happy or frowning iMac or graphite Apple, etc. I've seen the frowning Mac a couple of times, but it's not much better than the happy Classic...

No, common, the Classic is like totally outdated. If you want to be nostalgical, they could flash a Mac 128, but why the Classic? It sucked, the SE/30, that one was really cool. ![](http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/smile.gif) I'd prefer the graphite Apple and if you're in trouble they could just say so and give you the hex code...

On ROM? That's mostly on Disk nowadays but my disk is just spinning up when I get to see the happy Classic. That's why I was thinking of the happy Mac icon being in OpenFirmware. In any case, it can't be that easy to hack a new icon in there, but at least Apple could change it. What about a graphite Apple on the background of your case color? Graphite Apple on indigo background... cool.

What happens with Graphite on Graphite?
The Classic rocked dude!
Well, the Classic 2 and the Colour Classic did anyway.
Never had a Classic 1...
And they can't get rid of the Happy Mac ![](http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/smile.gif)
That'd be like changing the cursor...
Or the Apple logo, or the way the MacOS works... oh, wait...

OK, give the Apple a shadow like border, that'll do.
![](http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/smile.gif) Common man, that thing sucked b**t compared to my SE/30!

You lucky guy. That thing was darn slow, expensive and had hell of a crummy disk.

Dude, then make it a happy G4 for heck's sake, but that stupid Classic just isn't cool enough.
