Hey y'all... so my iMac froz and I restarted it like I always do, but now most of my application icons are gone. THey're just the generic diamond white with the pencil, and almost all documents are the blank document icon.

What the hell happened and how do I fix this?

Hi PhoenixG27,

The first thing you should try is rebuilding the desktop. The best way to do that is by using Micromat's free "TechTool Lite" utility.

Hope this helps,

Rebuilding the desktop is definitely the solution to your problem, as bottles suggests. However, you can accomplish the task without reverting to a third party app,(although Tech Tool is an excellent product). Restart your Mac and hold down the Shift , Option, And Command (apple) keys. Keep holding them down. You will first get a message telling you extensions are off. Keep holding them down. You will next get a message telling you that your desktop is going to be rebuilt. Click the OK button. After it boots all the way up, restart again to load your extensions.
Hope this helps.

Wow.... you guys are talking to me like I'm a first-time user! =D I'm as experienced a Mac user as y'all are here. I just wasn't sure if rebuilding was gonna do it. I like how you guys really (if I had no idea what I was doing) would have walked me right thru.

I'm sure you're very helpful to the newbies - keep up the good work!

Just FFR you need not restart the computer. You can rebuild whenever a volume is mounted - so, whats the easiest way to get to a volume mounting stage?

Force quit the Finder (Apple-Option-Esc), and then hold Apple-Option and rebuild.
