I have attempted to update to OS 9 using Apple's directions, and have been totally unsuccessful. I have a rev. D iMac, 96 MB RAM, and using OS 8.6. Essentially, the message says the firmware needs to be updated. Do I need to take it into a service provider. Many thanks for advice.

you can update the firmware by accessing ther firmware updater on the MacOS 9 CD in the CD Extras folder... be sure to read the ReadMe that is in the iMac Firmware Update folder, and follow the instructions carefully...

then install MacOS 9, but again, read the ReadMe called 'Before you Install' which is on the MacOS 9 CD and follow the instructions carefully
