9.1 killed my sound

I installed OS X this morning. Several programs were not working in it (like Virtual PC), so I booted in OS 9.1
Since I got into 9.1, I have no sound. I have trashed all the prefrences involved, booted with Base extensions and control panels, etc.
I know the sound is good as I hear the "chime" at startup.
Help!!

Did you try zapping the pRAM? When I upgraded to 9.1, my volume was dorked out, but zapping the pRAM fixed the problem in a pinch.

Yup. Zapped the PRam twice now, 5 times each time.
It has to be a software issue. whenever I try to adjust the sound, the thing just automatically goes back to silent (all the way to the left).
Help!!

I'm having the same problem in a Pismo with Mac OS 9.1 (booted into Mac OS 10.0 and then back to 9.1). A friend of mine (also has a Pismo) suffers from this too.

"5 times each"?
Nope, don't do that.
3 times for a PRAM zap, no more, no less.
If you're talking about the chimes on startup that is.
Open up your comp, and hit the CUDA reset button, unplug the comp from the power, and take the PRAM battery out.
Leave for 15 minutes on high, then serve.

weirdest thing happened last night about 3am. I was sleeping when all the sudden my "sleeping" Powerbook woke up and the hard drive began to spin at a million miles an hour. I ended up having to pull the plug and disconnect the battery as the screen was frozen (and I was having a real good dream and didn't want to be kept awake).
And what happened? Whallah! My sound is back this morning.

I have been told as few as 3, as many as 7. Is there any documentation on this?
