File storage service DropBox has assigned several executives to its board of directors. One of the executives is former National Security Advisor and US Secretary of State during the George W. Bush presidency, Dr. Condoleezza Rice. Following the reveal of Rice as a member of the Dropbox board, an initiative called "Dropdropbox" has been started. While purportedly not a partisan effort, the website calls for the ouster of Rice, citing historical events that occurred during her term of office as proof of her lack of ethics and her unsuitability to help govern the cloud storage company.
The dropdropbox website declares the appointment "deeply disturbing" and believes that "anyone -- or any business -- who values ethics should be concerned." On the other hand, the site does address her having been awarded her Masters degree at age 20, and provides a link to her wikipedia page for readers to educate themselves on her other accomplishments.
Despite blatantly stating that "this is not an issue of partisanship," several political events are noted by the site as reasons why Rice should not be on the board of a file locker like Dropbox. Clearly outlined are her roles and quotes from the buildup to the Iraq war, aggravated by death counts.
Also laid out as proof of her unsuitability for the role on the initiative's website are her involvement in the creation of the Bush administration torture program, support for warrantless wiretaps, and her role on the board of directors at Chevron prior to her tenure with the Bush administration. Possibly relevant to Dropbox is her support and approval of wireless wiretaps and presumed approval of the NSA monitoring programs she helped create, but as a director she would have no role in day-to-day operations.
Internet discussion on the matter is mixed, as expected. Many parallels are being drawn to Brendan Eich's ouster from the Mozilla Foundation over his conservative-leaning support for an anti-gay marriage bill in 2008. While the campaign doesn't seem to be directly politically motivated, it does point to political events that Dr. Rice was involved in and does address the fact that she used to be a Democrat before renouncing her affiliation and crossing the aisle in the early '80s.
The Dropdropbox website is registered to a proxy domain registration company in Scottsdale, Arizona. No personal information or contact data for the founder of the movement is currently available.

I have much better grounds to kick Gore off the Apple board but that's not happening.

So do these people want to impeach Obama. Wiretaps, for instance, are still going on. And his heavy use of drones to kill terrorist leaders in Pakistan does seem a bit worse that water torture. This is yet another sad example of those who want to politicize almost everything and drive anyone who disagrees with them out of work.

If Dropbox has so little spine as to give into these obvious ideologues, the my company, and I presume many others, would lose faith in their ability to run a business without caving into every narrow-minded persons whims. We would move to another service. We are paying customers, I bet many of these fanatics are not. I'm so tired of these temper tantrums, we truly have a pathetic culture these days.

Regardless of what you think of Ms. Rice -- I think she's a very bright and accomplished person despite my disagreements with her on some issues -- she is, in fact, an internationally-accused war criminal. Until that charge is resolved, she should probably not be sitting on any public boards. And this would go equally for any other persons who have been formally accused of war crimes, regardless of political party.
Should she submit to the tribunal at the Hague and have the charges resolved to her benefit, then by all means she could be involved in publicly-traded companies. However, when you put someone on the board of a publicly-traded company, you have to deal with, you know, the public -- and all their diverse opinions. If you're not ready for that, best not put controversial figures on your board. Or make them CEO.

My own beliefs aside, you could argue that everything related to her record on the Iraq war and CIA "enhanced interrogation"/torture unrelated to a file-sharing service. And there's certainly no dispute about her personal intelligence.
However, the fact that she was personally and directly involved in and instrumental to the government's warrantless wiretap program means that I simply do not trust a filesharing organization that she is on the board of. She clearly believes it is within the government's prerogative to eavesdrop on its citizens communications without due process if the government believes the need is great enough. While someone is welcome to argue that's acceptable, I, at least, am not.
And if you want to get partisan about it, I wouldn't want Obama on the board of an organization I relied on to keep my data safe from prying eyes, either. He may not have started the NSA program, but he didn't try to shut it down when he got into office, either.
It's not a question of morality. It's a question of the person's established record when it comes to privacy versus government surveillance.
