A new study done by Kantar Worldpanel, covering the big five European markets on the occasion of the Samsung Galaxy S5's first full month of sales, and found that it was unable to surpass Apple's 10-month-old iPhone 5s or even the iPhone 5c in sales. It did, however, come in third place -- with further survey results suggesting that the larger screen size of the S5 has had some modest success in attracting Apple users. In the US, the Galaxy S5 displaced the iPhone 5c to become the second best-selling smartphone in May. Kantar ComTech Strategic Insight Director Dominic Sunnebo said that "in general, consumers buying the Galaxy S5 were primarily attracted by its large screen size. This is something Apple is likely to address with the rumoured larger screen iPhone 6 launch expected in late September."
The iPhone maker is expected to launch models with at least a 4.7-inch screen as part of this year's revamp of its top-selling product. Rumors also point to an even larger, 5.5-inch model, and there is no evidence that Apple will drop the existing four-inch iPhone 5s or 5c -- raising the possibility that Apple will expand the number of options available for buyers.
The survey found that 17 percent of those who bought a Galaxy S5 were switching from an iOS device, but the vast majority of sales came from existing Samsung customers, accounting for 58 percent of sales. Windows Phone, which has found more success in Europe than it has in the US, is claimed to have 8.1 percent "marketshare" in the European market, with iOS at 16.6 percent and Android at 73.3 percent. Despite this, the iPhone 5s has remained the top-selling smartphone in both the US and Europe since its introduction in October of 2013.

Analysts are not as smart as they think they are. Although I think Apple should offer a choice of display size on iPhones, I don't think it's as critical as some analysts claim. There are still plenty of consumers in this world who are satisfied with smaller display sizes. Going as far as saying Apple will fail as a company because it doesn't offer multiple display sizes is going a bit too far. I'm sure there are many other reasons why consumers choose either an iPhone or Android smartphone that aren't based just on display size. The iPhone isn't going to necessarily gain market share just because a larger display size is being offered. My concern is that a larger display size won't necessarily boost iPhone sales to the degree that some people are saying. I'm really surprised that the Galaxy S5 isn't selling very well only considering the price cuts that are being offered should be hard for consumers to resist owning a fully-featured flagship smartphone for such a low price.

a significant number of people want a larger screen and are waiting on Apple to come out with one. I sure am.

Hell yeah. September 19 can't come soon enough as far as I am concerned. I will be going for the 4.7-inch model myself, but the 5.5-inch model could well outsell it in some parts of the world. It would be nice if Apple produced a iPhone 5 variant with an A8 chip, though, which would keep everyone very happy.

I agree...the only reason I didn't switch to the new HTC One M8 is because the iPhone 6 will have a larger screen. As much as I love my iPhone 5s & iOS, it just has become too much to handle the smaller screen, even with Accessibility max settings compensating. Old age is a bitch!!
It would be beneficial to maintain the 4-inch 5s design, but yes, Sept 19 can't get here soon enough!

My wife is holding her breath for iPhone 6's larger screen despite her old iPhone 4 is staring to crash and crap out due to running out of memory space constantly. I myself would like to wait and see how it compares to 5s before switching.

I have been holding off getting any smartphone because of my iPad - a old flip phone with the iPad work well enough for me. When it comes time to replace my phone, it will be with an iPhone *IF* the screen isn't too big.
In other words, just because there is a market for "make the screen bigger" doesn't mean there's no market for "keep the screen the same" or even "make the screen smaller".

What amazed me more than the fact that the Galaxy S5 in it's first month didn't outsell the iPhone 5S in Europe was the fact that they couldn't outsell the 5C. That's almost embarrassing and has to be eating into Samsung's profits.
I think Apple will do well to put the 5S and maybe the 5C as replacements for the 4S when they do go to the iPhone 6.

coffeetime: my old iPhone 4 is still running great. I've generally found that the two main causes of erratic behaviour such as you describe come from either a) never having actually powered down the iPhone or b) storage capacity is very close to completely full. Try to clear some space and do a shutdown and I'll bet a lot of the issues magically disappear.

chas_m: I still have iPhone 4 as well. I do exactly the same thing as you've done just to keep it above the water. I even downloaded the memory optimum app (it's alright). Taking video with fragmented space is really no fun. Like others, I prefer smaller screen iPhone and it fits in my pocket nicely. Planing to switch new phone this year but want to see iPhone 6 first (it's the 128GB that gets me interested, not the screen size).
