Adoption of iOS 8 stalled at 47 percent, new Apple tracking data shows

Adoption of iOS 8 has slowed dramatically, having only gained a single percentage point between September 21 and October 5, according to new App Store tracking data from Apple. The company's iOS 8 and iOS 7 are now in equal use. In fact, use of pre-iOS 7 firmware has somehow increased from five to six percent, even though Apple no longer supports it on any substantial level.
The reason for iOS 8's lack of progress is not identified, but people may have been deterred from updating for several reasons. These include well-popularized glitches -- including the faulty iOS 8.0.1 release -- and the size of the firmware, which for an over-the-air update requires at least 5.7GB of free space on an iPhone or 6.9GB free on an iPad. That can make it impossible for people to upgrade unless they choose to install via iTunes, or delete huge swaths of apps and media. Some may have even made the leap to iOS 8 but chosen to downgrade, which was possible up until the launch of iOS 8.0.2.
Sales of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus -- which come with iOS 8 pre-installed -- should, in theory, be helping adoption. They don't appear to be making a meaningful dent, however.

I upgraded my iPad (4th Gen) to 8.02 and there are just too many annoyances that I dare not upgrade my iPhone 5s. The Events in Photo do NOT sort as specified in iPhoto on my Mac. Every event you add is appended to the end of events. A real pain. Scrolling through the Events is painful to the eyes as the Graphics are VERY Jittery. Nothing smooth at all. These issues are noted in Apple Forum Threads but theres no update to Photos app that anyone speaks to. Since I'm the tech point person for about 40 relatives I've told them don't update to 8 unless there's a new feature you must have. And there are some great aspects of iOS8 I like. But I'm not going to subject both my devices to the issues.

I can understand vintagegeek's issues. For me, however, the suggestive keyboard and the Handoff features alone have been worth the upgrade. I've really had very little issue with anything in iOS 8, performance or feature wise.
Overall, I'd expect the adoption rate going from 7 to 8 would be less than 6 to 7, due to the tremendous change with the release on iOS 7. Both positively and negatively, 7 had more impact on previous 6 users than 8 does on 7 users.

No surprise. Do you think the 8.0.1 retraction has anything to do with this??? Nah. Not at all. It's not like it was all over the news, everywhere. QA failure.
And so I just discovered last weekend while attempting to upgrade my wife's iPhone 4S from 6.1.x to iOS 7, that iOS 7 is no longer available and v8.0.2 is the only option. We don't WANT v8. We want v7.
Apple is just completely out of control with their ridiculous insistence that you do what they tell you to do. They can kiss my ass. This is the last iPhone that will be in our household. And you can count us out of upgrading to iOS 8. I'm just glad that I grabbed v7 on my iPad 2 while I had the "chance."

You're getting awfully emotional over something that doesn't affect you.
The 8.0.1 update has been pulled (and frankly, the potential results weren't NEARLY as dreadful as that iTunes update ten years or so ago that would completely erase every external drive that had a "space" character in its name).
And seeing as you obviously didn't want v. 7 for over a year, instead opting to wait until after it is no longer available to finally install it, I have to question your judgment.

My judgement has nothing to do with this situation. This is entirely about Apple's release policy. But if you want to go that route, that's fine. I'll spell it out for you: we waited for release maturity in v7. I'd say a release is fairly mature by the time the next major release is available. The reason for this is because we understand the 4S is an older model, and we wanted to ensure any outstanding issues with older devices was resolved.
But I had absolutely no idea that you can not select what version to upgrade to... Apple makes that call for you. This is absolutely ridiculous.
And your apologetic attitude regarding Apple doesn't surprise me at all. Instead, I'm the problem, which is typical for people like you to claim.

It doesn't matter who the problem lies with. Everyone here is a voluntary member of Apple's ecosystem, joining and leaving it of their own volition.
You've chosen to exit the ecosystem of your own volition in search of solutions that better fit your usage and tolerances. I'm failing to see what the problem is. Perhaps the perceived problem is that you didn't solely choose to exit the ecosystem in order to find something that better fits your needs, but chose instead to preface your exit with a dramatic, sarcastic speech.

@Grendelmon. Definitely see your viewpoints; Apple's obsession with control is NOT the Apple most of us grew to love over the decades. There are many Apple faithful that will never see this, because, unfortunately Apple has far too many sycophants who can't (really won't) see anything as a fault or a problem with Apple's hardware, software, or policies. At any rate, you are right, Apple's already done the work to create each version of the iOS, they should simply allow you to easily download and install whichever version you wish, but that's not the case. However, if you google-around a bit, you will, I'm sure, find ways in which you can manually download and install whichever version of the iOS you wish. Might as well get a version which is supported by current jailbreaking; once you finally have real control of your iThings you'll never look back. It's amazing how much more useful these devices can be once you wrest them from Apple's dominance. As for iOS8, I pretty much had to install it on one device since I work in the IT support industry and need to know the changes reasonably well. In terms of performance, it's a definite downgrade on the iPad w/Retina display; choppier graphics etc. So I definitely advise staying away from it on your 4s until (if) Apple gets the performance issues fixed.

Well, I didn't state this, but the only reason to upgrade the 4S was because Apple didn't fix their FaceTime bug in v6. So really, we were looking to restore previous functionality that required v7.
Anyway, enough of my rant.

And you waited over a year to figure this out, and lived without that functionality for the entire time? And your decision to finally overcome this FaceTime issue somehow happens to coincide with with Apple releasing their next upgrade, cutting off previous upgrades (which they've done for the past six years)?
I'm having a very hard time following your reasoning, and I'm quite sure you're just focussing on one or two trivial issues that support your argument here.

Thanks for the tip, panjandrum. Perhaps there will be an 8.1 down the road.
