Users are starting to chime in on Google and Apple's support forums about a sudden incompatibility with video hosting service YouTube. Some users of OS X 10.10.1 are complaining that YouTube videos with leading advertisements either fail to load, play a discordant sound with no video, or crash Safari itself. Firefox and Chrome are not affected by whatever is causing the problem.

Users discussing the problem speculated that the overnight security patch forced by Apple was the culprit, but this is belied somewhat by Firefox and Chrome working properly. In fact, using developer tools to change Safari's identification to websites as either functional browser, most users report that the videos play back correctly.

Reported hardware varies. One MacNN staffer is reporting the problem, and one is not, each possessing a mid-2012 Retina MacBook Pro. Testing is continuing, but so far, we have not narrowed down a hardware or OS commonality between affected devices.

As our research continues, we will update accordingly.

Yep, clobbered me. Brand new 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 Retina MacBook Pro, 8 meg RAM. Downloaded 10.1.1 last night. I tried ½ dozen videos at random: some gave me a sound, some simply didn't play, and some gave me an error message. None played.

I suspect Google shenanigans as they appear to be trying to drive users to their applications and/or away from Apple applications.
Mail vs. GMail,
Safari on Windows vs. virtually any other browser (including of course Chrome).

It's starting to get annoying.

I went to YouTube and played the new Pitch Perfect 2 video (using HTML5) but when I went to the Taylor Swift Shake it Off video it initially said none of my video players would work even though I have HTML5. I went somewhere else, came back and it now gives me the HTML5 video. Found another one that initially didn't recognize HTML5 but refreshing site did get it. Looks like YouTube is having issues recognizing browsers. Of course Firefox and Chrome work fine, why would that surprise anyone? Running 10.10.1.

Yep, about 75% of the time the videos don't work for me, today anyway.

I've been trying a bunch of different videos on YouTube's page and they've all started by saying can't find proper browser player, then going to Flash (I have ClickToFlash running), then to HTML5. I have an old 2009 iMac so maybe my GPU is so slow it has time to figure things out before quitting.

Nope. Switch to Firefox, they work. Changing the User Agent doesn't seem to do it for me.

It's erratic, but when it happens on my Mac mini running the latest Apple software, it's a loud chirp, following by no video. Sometimes there's an unhelpful 'experiencing trouble' message from YouTube, sometimes not.

Click2Plugin installed. I get a half-second of "unsupported video" message, and then it's replaced by the standard QuickTime video controls. Works fine.

Edit: I don't have Flash installed, though.

Safari sucks - so no real surprise there!
