Foxconn's new assembly robots are proving too imprecise to manufacture Apple products, claims Chinese site Jiemian. First-generation robots have been assigned tasks involving larger components and tightening screws. The robots are said to have an accuracy of 0.05mm, however, this is not up to the 0.02mm threshold demanded for Apple hardware.

The origin of the problem is said to be the robots' roots in car manufacturing. Apple electronics are more precisely engineered and extremely thin, leaving little room for error. Foxconn is thought to be working on second-generation robots, but it could take years before robots play a major role in assembling products such as iPhones. An overwhelming amount of assembly work is currently done by humans, hired in the tens of thousands from around the region.

It's a darn shame and a waste of time and effort. It's like GTAT's promises of building useful sapphire displays for Apple's iPhones and then not being able to deliver.

The obvious solution, if Apple wants to go with robots, is to design their products with the limitations of robots in mind. Given how thick my iPhone is inside its Otter Defender case anyway, a little more thickness wouldn't matter.

If Apple would just make their phones the same size as cars, we'd be golden!

Future iPhones will be built by nano-bot. It gets too flat to be built by even human.

...the joke is: Those nano-bots are made by Samsung, the only manufacture in this planet that is capable of producing iPhone components. Made by Samsung, sued by Samsung, we do both (lifetime guarantee).
