In the midst of so much good news that came out of Apple in its fiscal Q1 report today, a significant milestore was also noted: the company said it had sold its one billionth iOS device, which it will keep for historical purposes. The device was said to be a 64GB Space Grey iPhone 6 Plus, and was part of the extraordinary 74.6 million iPhone sold worldwide in the holiday quarter. China sales played a major role as well, growing sales 157 percent from the previous quarter.

Of the total $74.5 billion the company raked in last quarter, China sales alone accounted for $16.1 billion, with the US and Europe just barely beating China in terms of regional revenue. China is likely to grow into the second-largest market for Apple sometime this year. Apple's sales in the country grew so fast in the December quarter -- up more than one-and-a-half times from the previous quarter -- that research firm Canalys believes the iPhone became the top-selling smartphone model in China, beating all rivals and even topping popular local manufacturer Xiaomi, which mostly produces cheap low-end phones and iPhone lookalikes.

If true, then sales of the iPhone in China are also likely to have topped iPhone sales in the US for the time ever. When looking at iPhone sales alone, China's $16 billion in sales (mostly from the iPhone) takes a roughly 30 percent slice of total iPhone revenues, which were $51.2 billion -- accounting for 69 percent of Apple's total revenue. Overall, China sales have grown 70 percent year-over-year, and are likely to increase further in 2015.

One of the factors behind that prediction is Apple's aggressive rollout of more stores in China, including a series of five that started opening right after (western) New Year's and will continue until Chinese New Year, observed this year on February 19. Cook said that the company will have 20 stores in China by that point, and plans on doubling that number across the next two years.

China's revenue was just barely beaten by the whole of Europe, which generated a combined $17.2 billion in revenue (a 20 percent rise), with the Americas up 24 percent to $30.6 billion. The growth of Apple's online presence in China was cited as a factor in the expansion in the region. During the conference call, Cook noted that the online Chinese Apple Store had taken in more revenue in the single quarter than the store had done in total in the previous five years.

In spite of the all-around strong numbers, the one-billionth iOS device sold is perhaps the most remarkable. It is likely that no other product group in human history has sold as well as quickly as the iOS line. To put the billionth iOS device into context, it should be remembered that no iOS devices even existed eight years ago: the iPhone first went on sale in the summer of 2007. By contrast, Apple has sold something just under 200 million Macs - one-fifth as many devices -- in the entire 38-year history of the company.

But, but, but . . . you can only get 'market share' by licensing an operating system. Everyone said that Apple couldn't amount to anything. Apple is doomed or something.

Again with the Title misnomer...
It's not 1 Billion shipped - it's 1 Billion Sold !!
Title says one thing, article states another.
There a BIG friggin' difference between the two,
despite Philip Schillers comment on the former.
Life's all about pushin' forward...

No, there is NOT a big difference between the two.

This is Apple, not Samsung.

Yes, you're technically correct, but Apple don't make more of anything than they can sell — their supply-chain and inventory management is among the best in the industry. They'd rather have shortage than over-supply.

In contrast to, of course, Samsung, whose legendary publicity stunts include claiming "TWOOOO MILLION SHIPPED!!!!!" and then taking almost two years to actually SELL two thirds of that.

Something like this is really hard to get your mind around....ONE BILLION sold. That's the same as saying 1 in 7 people on earth has an iOS device. (Although I know that's not the case since it includes many upgrades)

There is another mistake in the article and the subsequent comparisons: The $30.6 Billion is for "Americas" ... which means all of North and South America !!!! I know most Americans are oblivious to the outside world, and once they hear "Americ .... " they think it must be the USA, but there are a whole bunch of other countries out there on these two continents :-) Nevertheless, my guess would be that USA sales were probably around $20B, but I guess we'll never know for sure, unless Apple offers a detailed break-down.

You're right, it's not the US only (though I suspect the US figure is higher than $20 billion, since the US (by itself) remains Apple's top market. I'll adjust that.
