Universal Studios has released a full-length, two-and-a-half-minute trailer for its upcoming Steve Jobs biopic, which is set to open on October 9 and features Michael Fassbender in the title role, along with Seth Rogen as Steve Wozniak, Jeff Daniels as John Sculley, Kate Winslet as Mac marketing chief Joanna Hoffman, and Katherine Waterston as Chrisann Brennan, the mother of Jobs' first child, Lisa.

The film was written, based on Walter Isaacson's biography of Jobs, by Aaron Sorkin (best known in film circles for The Social Network, a movie about the creation of Facebook). As anticipated, the film takes place around three key product launches in Jobs' career -- the original Macintosh in 1984, the NeXT computer in 1988, and the iPod in 2001. Flashbacks and scenes detailing the lead-up to those presentations make up the balance of the movie, and include bits of well-known lore, including Jobs' initial denial of paternity for Lisa Brennan-Jobs, his firing from Apple, and his return in 1996.

The film is directed by Danny Boyle. He and Sorkin have both won Academy Awards for previous projects, with Boyle coming into the project late in the day following a string of pre-production setbacks that saw Sony Pictures eventually hand over the project to Universal.

The overlaid and occasionally non-contextual dialogue and rapid-fire editing make it difficult to judge Fassbender's performance, but the film's trailer makes clear that the movie is not focused on finding exact lookalikes for the people the actors portray, but rather it tries to capture the personality of its subjects. Steve Wozniak worked on the film as an advisor, which may lend the movie more accuracy than some previous efforts.

My God, this looks horrible. Looks like we're going to ahve to wait for the third movie about Steve Jobs for them to get it right. Fassbender would be better cast as John Sculley. They seriously couldn't ask a guy to so much as dye his hair for the role?
Just sayin'

Looks like Sorkin is just following the same story structure he used for The Social Network. That film had flashbacks into Facebook's early days which were centered around two different depositions by lawyers for Eduardo Saverin and the Winklevoss twins and connected by Zuckerberg still pining for Rooney Mara's character Erica Albright. This new film appears to be centered around three important presentations by Jobs, so the flashbacks will also revolve around them and be linked together by Jobs coming to accept Lisa Brennan as his daughter.

Trailer looks good. Steve Jobs doesn't look like him though but let's see how the drama carried out.

I'm a little mystified, I confess, by comments that Fassbender doesn't look much like Jobs (oddly, nobody ever comments on how Seth Rogan doesn't look a thing like Woz) -- as if this was important. You wanted this movie reshot with Ashton Kutcher?

Maybe most people don't get out to many biopic movies, but its actually fairly rare for the actors to actually look like the subject of the movie. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon looked nothing like Johnny and June Carter Cash, Jamie Foxx didn't look like Ray Charles, and Colin Firth bore no resemblance to King George VI. This didn't stop any of these films from being very good, with solid performances from the leads.

I have no idea if Fassbender can give us the feeling of Jobs, but knocking him on looks alone is a little silly. John Wayne once played Ghengis Khan, you know ...

I think after seeing Ashton Kutcher's performance on "Jobs" spoils my expectation. Ashton does look so much like Steve (young and old). If I hadn't seen "Jobs", Fassbender probably would be more easier on the eyes.

Nobody looks a thing like Woz! He's likely the only person the world over without a doppelganger.

Charles, if acting trumps appearance, then why not get Nicholson and Hoffman to play Jobs and Woz? Not every movie that can't match an actor's appearance works - have you seen "The Conqueror"? Jamie and Joaquin were close enough that their acting bridged any gaps, ditto Jim Carrey as Andy Kaufman. But a sandy blond Fassbender as Jobs and a red-headed Rogen as Woz? Nope.
Just sayin'

You think acquiring Nicholson and Hoffman would've fit into the budget?
