When presented a moral dilemma, ask the following two questions.
What solution is the fairest?
What solution is the most compassionate?
If the answers differ, weigh the two.

Try the method a few times. What is your agreement rate with results it generates?

Sounds a lot like the Rotarians’ “4-way test”:
Of the things we think, say or do
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
In any case, having ANY sort of positive code of conduct, and applying it (even only most of the time) will help anyone be “a better person.”

The best way to be a better person is to always do what a better person would do.

The key to “doing what a better person would do” is defining “better person”. Thus the need (for some people, anyway) for a “code” of some kind.
Without a real religious angle here, emulating Christ ain’t a bad code. Help the helpless, feed the hungry, defuse the mobs gathering stones to fling at some “other” person, etc.
Interestingly, there are a LOT of people (particularly here in Central and South Texas) who claim to “follow Jesus,” yet can’t guarantee they’d let the Man into their church. You know, long hair, sandals, no Mercedes, working carpenter…not “the right kind of people.” WWJD? These people haven’t a clue. Or they do, but they can’t be bothered to even try.
Senator Cory Booker said “I’d rather hang out with a nice atheist than a mean Christian.” To me that means that there are a whole lot of people who use the label “Christian” without following that code of conduct, even “for show.”
Which illustrates the major difference between “having a moral code” and “actually following a moral code.” If you say you follow a code, but don’t even try to do that, are you lying to the world, or to yourself, or both? Whatever way it turns out, the hypocrisy is heavy. And in this day and age, the hypocrisy is easy to see.
