Weird,
Rather than restart or shut down, my 500mhz iBook gives a message that an application will not quit ... that I should try quitting it first ... but there's nothing (that I can find) running. After a cntrl-command reboot it will shut down OK, before any other app is launched.
iBook 500mhz, 384mb, 10gig, airport ... occurs with both airport and ethernet. Does not occur with my G4 (no airport card).
Anyone else? Thanks,
Bill

Please, please ... help :-)
The message is:
"The computer cannot shut down down because
one of the running applications would not quit. Try
switching to the remaining applications and
choose Quit from the File menu."
But as far as I can tell there's nothing running :-(

Okay. Try a Command-Option-ESC to perform a force-quit and see if you can identify the application that is giving you the trouble (the ensuing dialog will tell you the current application that you are trying to quit).
If it is the Finder try trashing the Apple Menu Preferences in the Preferences folder of the system folder and rebooting (I get that once in a while). It the application is NOT the Finder try trashing its preferences and rebooting.
It may be a "hidden" application that is not in the Finder application menu like the Control Strip or some printer spooler program.

Voch is THE Apple Genius!
Trashing the Finder Preferences appeared to do the trick ... 'didn't try the Apple Menu Options Preferences, but will keep it in mind :-)
I'd forggoten to mention that I'd rebuilt the desktop and reset PRAM, to no avail ...
Arrigato! Gracias!
Bill
P.S. I wonder if this was truly a 9.2.2 problem, or battery/AC or airport/ethernet, or ?

I had the same problem on my dual usb ibook 500 a few weeks ago, holding down the reset button for 30 secs at the side of the laptop did the trick for me.

Oops ... no joy ... I spoke too soon :-(
Did it all: reset button on left side, reset PRAM, rebuilt desktop, reinstalled 9.2.2 (though not a clean a install), trashed the Apple Menu Option Prefs, Finder Prefs ... still get the same result ...
Command-option-escape aborts the finder ... still will not Shut Down, same message ... Command-option-escape again and it locks up ... command-control-power sometimes reboots ... but once I had to remove the battery :-(
God I hate to do a clean System install ... anybody have any other ideas?
Bill
P.S. again, it's a dual usb 500 iceBook, 10gig, 384meg, using Airport at home and ethernet at school.

Never Mind ... I'm now the proud user of a clean System 9.1 install :-()
Frankly, I never saw any change with 9.2.x
Thanks,
Bill

Sounds like you needed to cure what was causing the corrupt preference file(s). Trashing them may have fixed it once but it looks like a clean install took care of it once-and-for-all.
I sometimes get the corrupt Apple Menu Preferences file problem when I have to force reboot my machine and the desktop never repaints upon the next bootup. I then boot up with extensions disabled, delete the Apple Menu Perferences
file, and boot again and all is well. It happened once-in-a-while in Mac OS 9.1 but hasn't happened since I went to 9.2.1 (fingers crossed).
