sorry no, the 48GB is 12.5mm in height, you can use the 9.5mm drive in iBook.

Check out OWC. They're selling the new Toshiba 40 gig drive thats 9.5mm tall and will fit in your iBook. It goes for only 300 dollars as opposed to the IBMs 430 dollor price tag.

I have the toshiba 40GB HD in my icebook.
I bought it from OWC at $299. It comes as a bare not boxed.
And my ibook recognized it just fine, but after the initalization, only 37GB left...

does it affect battery life (in 10.1)

Yep, I did it by myself. Doing this will void the warranty.
Here is the instruction.
I heard if you bring the drive you want to put it in and your iBook to one of Apple retail store, they may replace it without voiding the warranty.

Anyway, it seems like it's not eating my battery more. I mean it is about the same.
I had 10GB one in my iBook and it was 7GB full so after the change and reinstallation, things are a lot faster, maybe it caused by the free space. But I think it runs bit hotter.

If you are thinking changing it by yourself, you'll void the warranty and you'll scratch it. The white paint on the case is so easy to give a scratch. It is like house paint on the glass.
Be careful!

One change here is that you'll only void the warranty on the Harddrive and anything broken or damaged by the installation. An Apple rep told me that if my install goes perfectly, everything is still covered except the new HD.
