I upgraded my PowerMac 4400 to MacOS 9.1 and ever since occasionally I get a message saying that the disc in the CD-ROM drive is unreadable and should be initialized, when there's no disc in the CD-ROM drive. At first I thought it might have been the drive gone mad, but recently I installed a Plextor 12x10x32 CD-RW in it and it still tells me same thing. Anyone got any ideas?

I doubt it's a 9.1 problem, more likely an extension problem. In any case, you're pushing the envelope with 9.1 on this machine (without a G3 upgrade) and will likely have better overall performance with 8.6.

With a third party drive the Apple CD extension probably doesn't support it. Either fully or at all. I have a StarMax 3000 (4400 clone) and I have to hack the extension.

Go to ResExcellence.com and look around. They have a utility that will alter you extension to support the drive.

If it is an extension problem then it is a MacOS 9.1 extension problem since those are the only extensions installed on the machine. Also I found MacOS 9.1 a lot snappier on the machine than 8.6.

The first time I had this was with the internal, Apple branded CD-ROM drive that came with the machine. What did amaze me though is that when I installed the Plextor CD-RW the Apple CD-ROM driver recognized the drive immediately.
