I have the library set up in iTunes 3, all mp3's converted with tags to 2.4.0. However, there is displayed no info in the column which should contain info about how much it has been played. How can I get iTunes to count?

You have to play the songs in iTunes (and let them finish) for the counter to increment.

In my opinion, the requirement that you let the song finish pretty much ruins the feature. It is so strange!
I mean, there are a lot of tracks with a few seconds of silence at the end, so I often switch to another track before the current track is all the way to the end.

I dont want it to count the previous 15 i hit the fast forward button on.

It would be pretty useless if using forward to jump ahead 5 songs incremented all the play counts.

Maybe a compromose then - only increment the count if you listen to 30 seconds or more of the song (or the whole song, if it's less than 30 seconds).

Come on, you guys are just trying to artificially boost your stats If you want a song to count you should to listen to the whole thing, or just skip ahead until there is only a few seconds left

The play-count feature as currently implemented is almost completely useless to anyone with ADD. None of thier songs will ever have a play count greater than zero. I thought the play-count mechanism was broken since I'd been using iTunes 3 for days yet only had a few songs in the most frequently played list. Incrementing when a song finishes playing simply doesn't work well for today's fast paced mentalities.
There are plenty of simple ideas for making this feature useful. Perhaps there should be a setting in the preferences for how to increment the play count.
Increment play-count for songs:
- When played
- When finished playing
- When played for # seconds
- When played for ##% of song length
