Well, I was told to check out a new Mac site over this last week and to my pleasant surprise find it to be quite nice indeed.

http://www.4osx.com

The actual forum software is amazing, I've never seen so many options. The community is growing strong (a little over 400 in less then a month) and just offers a fresh new "taste"....

Being a long time MacNN forum member, I recommend this site; however, not as a total replacement for MacNN, that will NEVER happen.

What do you guys think?

So does half the internet then.

Plus, seeing that it's open source, freely distributed, and freeware...I see no harm.

Does this damn piracy arguement have to come up in every thread? Can't we just restrict that discussion to the billion of threads that come up when OS X updates get released in the wild?

As far as the site in question, it seems pretty good. Maybe too complicated (and it seems a little XP-ish for my tastes). I'll peek over there now and then to see what's happening, though.

Wow that site has an irritating "feature"

I like opening certain links into a new window behind the current window - no need for tabs here!

4OSX.com seems to dislike this - and when I do it - both the new window and the old window load to the new address.

Why do people try and muck around with the basic rules of browsing? -wits

Why are you so adamant about promoting this site? I think it's pretty obvious it's not a "real contender" against anyone especially MacNN.

Posting pre-release copyrighted will get them the wrong kind of attention very fast. Other than that I dont think they have much to offer.

I think I made that clear as well; however, it's a new Mac site and we are ALL on the same side here people.

Don't like it? Don't use it. Simple. I wasn't asking anymore then to check it out is all.

They've just been lazy and used the standard invisionboard skin.
The content of the site looks pretty good, but the design sucks. I like the way the MacNN forums get out of your face design wise. That new checkbook advert is a bit annoying though.
Nothing to see, move along.

Hehe, maybe because you can't download that Safari v62 without registering?

Honestly, though, I'll take a look at this site.

This is a notice to ALL NON-POSTING MEMBERS: If you have registered solely to download software and do not post within ONE DAY, your account will be BANNED. Banned users are unable to re-register and will be forever forbidden from downloading any software from this site. We do not tolerate leechers and would like at least one post out of every member, even if it's a word of thanks. Remember, if you're banned, you won't be able to benefit from any new or current software that we release!
in the past year+ that ClayShaker the site I run has been up we've probably had about 500 members... acctually more but whatever... members mean nothing though because tons of forums have tons of names that never post.
As for the quote... the software that THEY release? Hmm... wonder what they release.... aside from apple's unreleased work

Yeah, I'd like to see this f-wits go down.

Hosting unreleased software is under NDA is just not on.

And the "stories" on the front page are just a joke.

Mods, please close or delete this topic. It seems we've gotten off on a bad start and things are quickly going from bad to worse here.

We've removed our unreleased software, to prevent any people who think it's a "gimmick".

If you have anything good to say, you can start a new topic or something, as I don't think the goal of 4 OS X has been clearly explained here.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

I think in the main that new Apple sites are good. I also think that hosting or linking to released or otherwise okayed software, is fine too. Additionally, urging people to post, etc., is also fine.

However. The idea that someone is a "leecher" for downloading software from someone WHO DID NOT IN THE FIRST PLACE DESIGN OR OTHERWISE PLAY ANY ROLE IN CREATING THE SOFTWARE, is absurd, and creating conditions for doing so is unsupportable except through reference to greed, because in doing so you are profiting from someone else's work, which is a step beyond simply allowing others to look-see it. This kind of attitude is especially indefensible in regards to open source component software. If you don't want people to download software you (rightly or wrongly) host, don't host it.

Other than this the site looks fine, based on the short time I visited it.
i look in your general direction

I wasn't impressed by their behavior at all.

I went over there, posted a very polite note asking them to reconsider their claim that since 'Safari is GPL' it was fine to post it for download.

My post was deleted.

I asked why it was deleted, and our pal iMike said he removed it because as far as he was concerned, it was OK to post Safari betas, and he didn't want people to discuss the legality of it.

Not to be smug, but an Apple letter later, I guess he sees the flip side of the legal argument.

As for promoting a pro-speech, open-discussion environment, we'll see.

I'd prefer to just let this one wither away.

It's not that "amazing" to be able to install software and post pirated software.

I got the link for b62 from Dave Hyatt's blog. It was hardly that secret. It was slashdotted FFS.

edit: and from 4OSX I got the link for b64. What's in b64 that isn't in b62?

you need to unlock them with the debug menu.

open that by typing this into the terminal

Code:
