I've tried three different versions of Panther (from the original WWDC preview up to 7B68) on my Sawtooth G4 and not one has functioned properly with either of my GeForce 2MX card. It looks like there is some sort of incompatibility between the Sawtooth motherboard, the GeForce 2MX drivers and the GeForce 2MX card.

One of my cards comes from a QuickSilver and the other is a flashed PC card. Panther does run but changing resolution freezes the system and dragging windows causes the contents to disappear.

Can anyone tell me if they have experienced a similar problem or if there is a workaround? I just hope this won't be broken in the final release.

Just to note that all version of Panther I've had work on my 500MHz iBook flawlessly. I wonder if nVidea have just not finished the Panther version of their drivers. Can anyone tell me if they have run Panther on a Quicksilver with a GeForce 2MX?

Even up to 7B80 Panther still won't boot with a GeForce 4mx card installed (screen shuts off after initial grey apple). From what i've read in this forum it seems to be specific to this machine. It may be a driver issue because as soon as i take the driver out of the extensions folder, it boots fine (slower of course because there is no video driver).

But is this a different machine than the G4 450 Sawtooth? Is yours an updated graphite or MDD? I was originally referring to the Sawtooth with the video card upgraded to a GeForce. Post back if you get a chance. Thanks.

I know its not the same motherboard, but my Apple OEM GeForce 2MX on my Digital Audio G4 466mhz has been good from the start, except fast user switching which in the beginning had some artifacts which has since been corrected.

Have you tried zapping the PRAM a couple times? Some monitor settings get stored there.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that and it doesn't do anything. When i boot into safe mode it boots alright... but then there is no nvidia driver loaded, among other things.

I'll see how it goes with 7B85. It is such a small group of users, i have a feeling i will be SOL.

Thanks for reponding.

i've had problems with geforce cards in a sawtooth board, and i've heard of others... with QE enabled on a geforce3, i would get a flashing effect, like the screen would briefly dim down for a split second every time QE was using the GPU.

i've heard of other reports like this on xlr8yourmac.com forums. I know that the geforce2/3 cards use quite a bit of power so maybe the AGP slot just isn't able to properly power the card.

I'd suggest getting cheap AGP Radeon card, maybe a used OEM 7500 or a 9000.

Yeah. It's starting to look like getting another card would be better. The dumb thing is, is that it works fine in Jaguar. Maybe the UI is offloaded even more in Panther, hence all the snappiness? Thanks again for the replies.
