The Exceptions
For those who are unique, and do not fit elsewhere.
The square pegs in the round holes.
You should be living on Mars, but they don't sell tickets yet.
Driving the car backwards on the highway to see if you get better mileage.
Turning a simple bedroom into a secret computer room filled with noise and heat. The room mate just doesn't understand.
-----------------------------------
There are other places for people to go:
College Kids. Don't ask, we know it all already.
Just want to sit down.
Lurkers, feel like an outsider?
Big Corporate - Yes, Sir.
But if you are unique like everyone else, this team is a good place to be. We'll take your huddled masses, your tired and oppressed, those yearning to be free.
We don't try to arrest lurkers sleeping in the park. We're not interested in what you wear to work, or when you were born. And the school of Hard Knocks is just as good as Harvard here. Wherever you came from is ok, what matters is that we're here now.
We're here now to win.
-----------------------------------
As a free signing bonus, the long promised Stats Sigs will be available to Exceptions during the race. Others will get them after the race ends. Just post membership here, and your Sig will be turned on. I started working on the code tonight, it will be ready in time, for those who do not fit.

Raven has been around for quite a while. And he is certainly noticable on the folding team. I would guess that something happened to his old Raven account so that he had to sign up as Ravens.

A crash project at work has been eating almost all my spare time for the past few weeks. Bad for team participation and coding, good for the bottom line.
It's been good for my production too, less time lost to games.
Anyway, the stats sigs will be delivered to all Exceptions first, for two weeks regardless of the race. If we win, I'll make it 3 weeks exclusive.
There was enough time to dig up dirt on the Corporates (re - toxic dumping) with great success, we are handling them quite well. I was thinking of digging up more ammo on the other teams - the College Kids might be vulnurable to tree-hug-type stuff "Save the mice!".
We need something on the Lurkers and the Over The Hill Gang, they are crunching way too much. Starting a rumor about a forum posting tax might work on the Lurkers.

Well, just an update... I've lost a few days WU's due to me being a muppet.
I had a failed overclock go pear shaped on me, and had all sorts of cpu cooling issues to sort out as a result.
Back, up and running now (for what it is worth!)
Although overclockfest mk2 will begin in earnest when I get some new kit delivered on Thursday...

The Over The Hill Gang won. We only came in #3. They probably had some old-boy networking going on.
I finally broke a few hours free and hacked away some more at the sigs code:
It's rendering an output image, but hitting an error trap. I need to fill in more code and run some real data through, that's a project for another night. Once it's running, Exceptions will have exclusive access for the first two weeks as promised.

working sample on my local box:
The code is cleaned up, I'm into the fiddle-with-image-and-text-layout stage. Alternate images/layouts welcome. If all looks good, I'll upload the files and turn the sigs on.

In the meantime, I've made separate sig entry points for each Exception - use the second version of the sig image URL. This is workable for all five of us, but would be a serious drag to set up for all MacNN members. We'll be needing a more elegant solution.
Nice work Reader50

Sorry guys, I should have posted instructions. Enclose the sig URL inside vBB image tags like this:
[ img]http://teamstats.macnn.com/fold/sig301.php[/ img]
Just remove the space inside each tag and it will work.

Do you have access to a server running apache? You can use mod_rewrite to do what you want to do. For example, mod_rewrite can take the URL http://teamstats.macnn.com/fold/sigs.php/353 and change that to http://teamstats.macnn.com/fold/sigs.php?UID=353
That should be an easy way around the variable problem.

First results, after 3 days of live sigs. Averaging 3 MB per day in outgoing graphics, on track to 100 MB per month with just 5 sigs active. By comparison, teamstats without sigs is projected around 750 MB for the month for a much larger number of users.
Extrapolating to perhaps 50 active sig users after our two weeks are up would give 1 GB per month. Teamstats alone has reached that high once or twice.
I'm guessing the number is so high because MacNN is a high traffic forum. The Placid Casual alone accounts for 70% of the bandwidth while most of the rest is mine followed by billybob128. My haunts are Team and PowerMac, I'd guess he visits the Lounge and/or OSX a lot.
Our current sigs are just under 3 KB each, some experimentation revealed that 3/4 of the filesize comes from the team logo. I'm going to switch the member sig pattern to remove the logo and cut the bandwidth to 1/4 . Removing the logo will increase the text area a bit, that will help with the tight data on the middle line.

Ooops! Sorry!
If you want me to stop using the sig, or modify usage patterms or something, just say... I don't mind at all.
My main haunts these days are the lounge, Powermac forum, and here... I also have been online a bit more than normal in the last week or so...

The sigs are here to use. Don't mind me, we're just muddling around in the backend to make sure they will work when they're available to everyone.

You're fine, don't worry about it. In fact, the bandwidth with the first sig versions would be ok for just the five of us. We're watching server load and planning ahead for Feb 20, when sigs become available to everyone.
