Safari's default home page is now pointing to an Apple site, not a Netscape branded site.

originally it was a page refresh to an apple branded netscape site (part of a deal awhile back). now it is their own site.
livepage.apple.com is the default safari homepage. it was directing to a branded Apple site, hosted by Netscape. it had cnn news, etc too.
now, it is all apple, no more cnn feeds and netscape crap.

i remember a mac news site saying it was going to change, it just didn't have a date when it would happen. for the last week or so, when the redirect hung or paused for net congestion, you could see the page title change to the words 'Testing' so i knew it was going to happen soon. well, soon is now, now
and yes, i liked the cnn headlines too. not that i didn't go to cnn anyway, it was just a nice page to start with.
this apple one, the only beef is their font choice of the news pieces (all apple news now, of course)

i realize you can still get them, my comment is that apple's livepage.apple.com no longer goes to those anymore, it takes you to their own (apple only) news site.

Yeah, and my reply was directed at the person who said they liked the old-style home page better. That person might not have known that you could still get to similarly-functional pages. Just trying to be helpful.

So I assume this change was just a re-direct or something or what? Or did it automatically configure Safari with this new page somehow?

Safari, until you change the default, has a default home page of livepage.apple.com (any safari updates, patches makes it the default too). it has always been a redirect page. until tonight, that page redirected to a netscape branded news site with apple news, sports, cnn headlines, etc. it now redirects to their own site www.apple.com/startpage which is only apple info.
