Mega claims million-user barrier broken 1 day after launch
Mega has seen over one million users sign up for its service in its launch day, the company reports. The user-number milestone was claimed by Kim DotCom himself at a launch event for the service in New Zealand, along with a message to governments, copyright holders, and to others seeking its closure: "We cannot be stopped."
At the launch event, held at DotCom's mansion in New Zealand according to The Next Web, the CEO attacked the closure of Megaupload, saying "our copyrights and access were taken from us without a trial or notice." He also framed the company as being one with privacy at it's core, with the service built "from the ground up to adhere to the law." The future of the company will also involve the launch of Megabox, a music hosting service, within the next six months, with content distribution being its ultimate goal.

Mega itself opened itself up to users earlier this weekend, offering 50GB of online storage at no charge. A choice of "Pro Membership" options offer as much as 4TB of storage and 8TB of bandwidth at $30 per month, which dwarfs similar offerings from cloud storage providers such as Dropbox and SugarSync.

The event also played host to a reenactment of the Mansion's raid last year, complete with "FBI" black helicopters and actors dressed in SWAT costumes, before segueing into an on-stage dance routine.
