LG has opened up <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/280514==http://www.lgblog.co.uk/2013/03/lg-oled-on-sale-now/" rel='nofollow'>pre-orders</a> for its 55-inch OLED HD television in the United Kingdom. Shipping to customers in the US and <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/280515==http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/01/01/lg.oled.tvs.to.hit.other.markets.q1.2013/" rel='nofollow'>South Korea</a> later this month, the 55EM970V weighs less than 22 pounds, measures 4.5mm (0.18-inches) thick, and though will not offer the same Ultra-HD resolution as its larger 84-inch counterpart, it will still provide what is claimed to be "exceptional picture quality."<br />
First shown off at <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/280516==http://www.electronista.com/articles/12/01/10/lg.display.gives.us.a.glimpse.of.future.products/" rel='nofollow' target="_self" title="">CES in 2012</a> and subsequently receiving a number of awards, the display uses a carbon fiber backing in order to stay as thin as possible. LG's WRGB technology allows the set to use a white sub-pixel to improve the color quality, and also comes with Smart TV and Cinema 3D capabilities.
Pre-orders for the first shipments are being accepted by Harrods of Knightsbridge, London, for delivery to UK customers in July at a cost of £10,000 ($15,000).
Though the pricetag is high for a HDTV, LG is working on increasing the supply of OLED panels in the future through a <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/280517==http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/02/18/new.line.in.south.korean.factory.to.produce.tv.pan els/" rel='nofollow' target="_self" title="">$657 million investment</a> into OLED production lines.
