Briefly: Facebook UK Android update, IBM tech center
Facebook has updated the Android version of its Messenger app in the United Kingdom, enabling Voice over IP (VoIP) calls in the country. The new version comes just days after the same update appeared on the iOS version for the UK, with users being able to place calls to other Messenger users by tapping the "i" button then "Free Call." The unannounced Android update has taken place in a much shorter time-span than the two-months seen when the feature first rolled out in the US and Canada.
IBM is establishing a new technology center for software development and maintenance service in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The new location will create 800 direct and 540 indirect jobs, and will focus on technology relating to application development, app management, and system integration. As part of the agreement with IBM, the State will provide $14 million in funding over the next 10 years for higher-education programs designed to increase the number of computer science graduates in the area.
