YouTube co-founder names MixBit collaborative video site
YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley has revealed the name of his <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/282267==http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/03/11/possible.launch.in.next.few.months.not.a.youtube.c ompetitor/" rel='nofollow'>upcoming</a> video collaboration site, while also poking fun at his previous endeavors. <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/282268==http://mixbit.com/" rel='nofollow'>MixBit</a> was officially named by Hurley on <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/282269==https://twitter.com/Chad_Hurley/status/318681911247646720" rel='nofollow'>Twitter</a>, after hinting in a SXSW talk last month that he was close to finally launching the service, and claims it is not a competitor to YouTube<br />
<br />
The post, referring to a <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/282270==http://youtube-global.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/youtube-contest-submissions-closing_31.html" rel='nofollow' target="_self" title="">current</a> YouTube April Fools Day joke, states "Since YouTube is ending, we're launching a new video site," before finishing "This time it's not a contest!" The MixBit site currently shows a landing page with a mailing list sign-up section, along with an image continuing the YouTube joke. The page reads "Instead of sitting around, we thought you'd want a new site to not only watch cat videos, but create them... together!" This follows on from the SXSW talk, where Hurley told of the project being "primarily video-based... and gives flexibility for people to work together and create content." <br />
<br />
Though the landing page gives little in the way of clues as to how the site would allow collaborative video creation, <em>The Verge</em> <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/282271==http://www.theverge.com/2013/4/1/4169494/mixbit-video-collaboration-site-chad-hurley-youtube-founder-announcement" rel='nofollow' target="_self" title="">reports</a> of a Google <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/282272==http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:jAr7cB-Bqu8J:www.mixbit.com/video/_17MjFEdzhlsiLbypKtOlCR+&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk" rel='nofollow' target="_self" title="">cache</a> showing a looping mp4 video embedded in a page, featuring Hurley and fellow YouTube co-founder Steve Chen. <br />
<br />
MixBit is the latest project from the creators, who previously worked on personalized magazine creation site <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/282273==http://www.electronista.com/articles/12/04/07/zeen.to.offer.two.way.magazine.making/" rel='nofollow' target="_self" title="">Zeen</a>, as well as the highly popular video service YouTube, which they sold for <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/282274==http://www.electronista.com/articles/06/10/09/google.buys.youtube/" rel='nofollow' target="_self" title="">$1.65 billion</a> to Google in 2006.
