Briefly: Vodafone 4G in Australia, Fox threat over Aereo
Vodafone is to launch its 4G services to Australian customers in June. The initial rollout will see Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Wollongong, Newcastle, and the Gold Coast covered with 4G service, according to ZDNet. Tests on the 4G signal shows it as having a download speed of 80Mbps and an upload of 20Mbps, with a claimed maximum of 150Mbps possible for some customers. Like its competitors, national carriers Telstra and Optus, Vodafone will be keeping its 4G service charges the same as its 3G access, and hopes to have 1,000 4G sites operational by the end of 2013.
News Corp to make Fox a pay-TV service if Aereo allowed to operate
News Corp is threatening to push Fox from being a broadcaster into a cable channel, if rebroadcasting startup Aereo is not stopped by US courts. The network would become a pay-TV service to protect the billions spent on programming and revenues from advertising, with Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey declaring "We need to be able to be fairly compensated for our content" to TV executives, reports Bloomberg. After accusing Aereo of stealing "our signal," Carey vowed "We will move to a subscription model if that's our only recourse." Aereo recently won an appeal against broadcasters over its legal standing, with the US Second Circuit Court of Appeals declaring the New York-based startup does not infringe on the copyrights of broadcasters.
