Job listings point to Apple starting Orlando-based chip development
Apple is planning to set up chip development facilities in Orlando, Florida, seven job listings discovered by AppleInsider indicate. Most are related to developing and testing processors. One of them calls for a "GPU Csim/Reference Model Engineer" who would specialize in "modeling GPU hardware;" the listing also mentions running iOS on "pre-silicon platforms." Two other jobs involve design verification, and ask for people to "develop verification plans, create verification test bench components, generate tests, run simulations, and debug design issues," among other responsibilities.

What the overall goal for an Orlando facility might be is uncertain, though Apple is presumably thinking of handling at least some of its A-series processor design there. Florida could soon become an important hub for Apple design work; recently the company posted an opening for a software engineer at a previously unheard-of "Melbourne Design Center" in the state. That work though is believed to be related to fingerprint recognition, since Melbourne is where the now Apple-owned AuthenTec was based.
On the surface Orlando may be an unexpected location for Apple chip design, as the city isn't well-known for its tech presence. AMD does have a research, design, and development office in the area, but American companies are more likely to base design work in California's Silicon Valley.

finally!
a chip fabrication facility vs. the flying-saucer-techical-chanllenged-head-quarter-for-white-collars which I think is a waste of $$$$$$$. You just don't want Samsung to monopolize the chip industry. This facility will be worth every penny to invest.
