Amazon-Goodreads deal quashed Apple iBookstore plans, say sources
Amazon's buyout of Goodreads in late March also had the effect of derailing Apple plans for the iBookstore, say Wall Street Journal sources. During the past year, Apple and Goodreads reportedly discussed integrating Goodreads content into the iBookstore, namely in the form of displaying user reviews and ratings. The scheme would've echoed the way Rotten Tomatoes ratings are presented alongside movies on iTunes.
Despite the amount of time involved, talks are said to have made little progress. Last month, Apple is said to have tried to revive its efforts, but been mystified when executives at Goodreads went silent. The Journal sources explain that Amazon had already shown interest in buying Goodreads, and that the latter had reciprocated, complying with an Amazon demand to stop talking to other companies while a deal was finished. The resulting arrangement could ultimately cost Amazon over $200 million, assuming certain metrics are met.
Around the same time, an Apple official not involved in the iBookstore talks allegedly contacted Goodreads to see if it was interested in other options. The offer was declined.
Apple and Amazon have become increasingly competitive with each other. While Amazon was once known simply as an online mall specializing in books, it has since branched out into selling MP3s, video, Android apps, and tablets. The company is even rumored to be working on a phone, which could present a challenge for the Apple iPhone.
