Provo, Utah city council unanimously approves Google Fiber offer
The seven-member Provo Municipal Council approved Google's offer to buy the iProvo fiberoptic network. The unanimous vote makes Provo the third area to adopt the search engine as an internet provider. While Google has to pay the area $1 for the right to use the extant fiber, the locality has a number of additional expenses related to the network that it must still pay, not previously announced.

Provo taxpayers are still on the hook for a $39 million bond that the city issued to build the network in the first place. The city still owes $3.3 million including interest per year for 12 years, in addition to $722,000 in equipment to allow the government to continue using the gigabit service for services like traffic lights and police services.

Additionally, Google has required that Provo precisely map the fiber lays, which will cost an additional $500,000. Provo has the option to spend $500,000 for an insurance policy to cover legal damages should the network not be presented to Google as planned.

Google will own the network outright, and will be responsible for modernizing and maintaining the decade-old hardware. The search engine is also required to provide free gigabit service to 25 public schools, recreation centers, and other public services.
