Samsung Australian Galaxy S4 launch plagued by delays
Samsung's Australian Galaxy S4 launch has been hit by shipping delays. The Korean tech giant put on a glitzy launch in Sydney on Wednesday, even lighting up the Opera House to celebrate the occasion. Although the launch event was held just a few days before its promised arrival in stores on April 27, the company made no indication that customers may have to endure any shipment issues.
Instead, many customers were left disappointed to find signs up in telco retail stores on the Australian launch day indicating that shipments had been delayed with no word on when they were expected to arrive in store. A check on Sunday by Electronista revealed that stores had still not received their expected shipments. Despite having no devices in stock, telcos including Vodafone were still signing customers on to new plans with the promise to ship the customers their devices directly when they arrived.
Australia is one of 11 countries that was targeted for an April 27 launch of the eagerly awaited flagship Android smartphone. While Australians have previously received the Exynos variants of the Galaxy S devices, on this occasion Australian customers like their US counterparts miss out on the more powerful Exynos Octa 4+4 processor. Instead they will pick up a Galaxy S4 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core chip when their devices eventually arrive.
An unlocked, contract-free Galaxy S4 16GB will retail for $899 in Australia, including a 10 percent GST. A 16 GB iPhone 5 retails for $799, including a 10 percent GST as a point of comparison.
