BlackBerry outs Q5 phone with QWERTY keyboard, BB10.1 update for Z10
BlackBerry has revealed a BB10 smartphone aimed at emerging markets, at the same time as announcing the BB10.1 update's availability for the flagship Z10 device. The Q5, a remarkably similar device to the Q10 and leaked last week, provides the same QWERTY keyboard and 3.1-inch touchscreen as its more-expensive stablemate, but in a cheaper package.
Internal specifications for the Q5 were not revealed by the company, except that it will have a range of colors including red, black, white, and pink, instead of the more corporate appearance of the Q10. It will initially launch in July in parts of Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. A release in the US is likely to occur at a later date, but it is not known how much the Q5 will retail for.
The BB10.1 update, also announced during the BlackBerry Live conference will be available for owners of the Z10 to download from today onwards, with the exact date varying between carriers. Notable changes in the mobile operating system includes personalized notifications for accounts and contacts, the option to call phone numbers listed in e-mail and BBM messages, improved cursor control, an HDR shooting mode for the camera, and an improved BlackBerry Hub.
