Google killing Google Checkout, migrating some to Google Wallet
Today, Google made it known to its array of merchants that it is discontinuing the Google Checkout functionality, and migrating some existing users to Google Wallet. In a blog post announcing the move, Google called the Wallet product "a platform that enables merchants to meet the demands of a multi-screen world where consumers shop in-stores, at their desks and on their mobile devices." Users have six months to find an alternative solution, if not migrated automatically.
Merchants can continue to accept payments with the Checkout service through November 20, 2013. Google has partnered with Braintree, Shopify, and Freshbooks to offer discounted migration options, if needed. Google Play developers, as well as Chrome Web Store and Offers Marketplace will continue to be supported, and will make the transition automatically.
Shoppers can continue to use Google Wallet to make purchases, and are generally unaffected by the move. Google has scheduled a webinar on May 23 at 10AM PST for businesses to learn more.

It's kind of fun to see other companies which copy Apple copy Apple's mistakes as well. One of Apple's worst mistakes, which it has made over and over and over again through its history, is to discontinue products which people are actually using and force people to migrate to other "solutions". The result? For decades, business (and education) IT departments regarded Apple as unreliable, because every time they got used to a product it got pulled. Of course, in a sense Google has covered its butt on this one by declaring absolutely everything to be "beta" and giving warnings about potential discontinuations in its terms of service, but I guarantee you that everyone who has been using Google Checkout is going to think twice before signing up for anything else Google puts out related to money.

I was an infrequent user of Google checkout, but I felt a lot better knowing that PayPal had competition. Google is rapidly developing a reputation for pulling services people (few, perhaps, but still) depend on in favour of gimmicky crap that may or may not (coughGOOGLE+cough) be more popular.
