Powermat acquires PowerKiss, extends wireless charging into Europe
PowerKiss, a wireless charging company based in Helsinki, Finland, has been acquired by Powermat, also a creator of wireless charging systems for mobile devices. The purchase will bring PowerKiss under the Duracell-backed brand, adding its 1,000 wireless charging points in European McDonalds branches and airports to the existing 1,500 Powermat-owned charging spots in the United States.

The deal will also be helpful to the Power Matters Alliance (PMA), a consortium for wireless charging that both companies are members of, along with Starbucks, Google, and AT&T. While PMA and its standard already claims a number of hardware manufacturers as members, the increased coverage of Powermat and the standardization of the technology in both the US and Europe will help PMA compete against the Wireless Power Consortium, which uses the alternate Qi wireless charging standard.

"Our two companies have a remarkably similar vision for wireless power, and have labored in parallel to make it a reality," said PowerKiss CEO Mats Wolontis. "Along the way we made different and incompatible technological choices, and this is exactly the right time to resolve these."
