HTC One sales near five million, boosting shipments to meet demand
HTC says it has sold nearly five million units of its HTC One smartphone. Although only around half of the 10 million Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphones sold, the figure is still a strong result. The news will be a morale boost for the Taiwanese company amid reports that it has lost several senior executives following a disastrous first quarter that saw the company return just $2.8 million profit on over just $2 billion is revenue.
An anonymous HTC executive informed spoke to Wall Street Journal, confirming that the One is selling well. "Orders are pretty good so far and are still more than what we can supply," said the executive. "This is partly due to the shortage of components. When the issue is resolved next month, we will have a better idea if it's doing really well or not," the exec added.
The HTC One is a critical device for the company. It's other high-profile handset, the First, which features tight Facebook integration has been struggling to gain any traction following Facebook's decision to make the Facebook Home Android launcher available as a free downloadable app for several leading handsets. The One, however, is where HTC is pinning its hopes of a comeback, with the early signs indicative that it may be seeing some long-awaited success. HTC has previously indicated that it will be in a position to double its supply of the One from the middle of May.
