Third-party replacement MacBook batteries recalled for fire risk
Retailer Best Buy is recalling 5,100 third-party battery replacements for the black and white MacBooks, made by a company called ATG and sold through the retailer's Geek Squad service division or online between 2008 and mid-2012 due to the risk of overheating and fire. The US Product Safety Commission has collected 13 reports of incidents with the replacement batteries, including one where the buyer suffered a serious burn on their leg. The batteries are also sold through other retailers, but only Best Buy has initiated a recall at this point.

The batteries are Chinese-made replicas of Apple batteries intended to replace exhausted or defective original batteries, and retailed for about $50 -- less than half the price of Apple's own replacement units, reports the San Jose Mercury News. They were imported to the US through BTI Corporation of Las Vegas, and the supplier makes replacement batteries that fit dozens of computer models, though thus far only problems with the ones that fit black and white MacBook polycarbonate models (sold between 2006 and 2011) have been reported.

Customers who have such a replacement battery -- easily identifiable due to the large "ATG" logo on the battery itself -- are strongly advised to stop using the product immediately even if there is no sign of abnormal performance, and contact Best Buy to return the batteries for either replacement or a Best Buy gift card. Buyers can call Best Buy at (888) 737-6954 between 7AM and 9PM Central Time or email bestbuypartexchange@decisionone.com, or click on the "Product Recalls" section of the company's web page (bottom of page) for more information. Users can also report incidents here.

The particular model numbers being recalled by Best Buy are "MC-MBOOK13B" which fits black MacBooks, and "MC-BOOK13W" for the white MacBooks. The batteries are easily removable without any need for tools beyond a coin to open the battery case lock.
