Upgraded Sony Xperia Z prototype with Snapdragon 800 leaks out
Although the Xperia Z powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro has yet to officially arrive in the US, serial Russian smartphone leaker Eldar Murtazin has tweeted that he has already been testing an upgraded Xperia Z prototype running the new Snapdragon 800 quad-core CPU. According to Murtazin, the upgraded Xperia Z is "really fast," while he also says the screen appears to be an upgraded LCD3-type, like the much praised display on the HTC One. However, Murtazin is not convinced that Sony will necessarily use this display when it goes into production.

Sony is widely expected to reveal a 6.3-inch Xperia Z Ultra phablet on July 4, which also incorporates the Snapdragon 800, suggesting that mid-cycle processor upgrade is a distinct possibility. According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 800 delivers 75 percent better performance than the Snapdragon S4 Pro. It uses Qualcomm's latest iteration of its Krait architecture, with its Krait 400 cores clocked at up to 2.3GHz. It is also paired with an upgraded Adreno 330 GPU that offers 200 percent more graphics processing power than the Adreno 320.
The current Xperia Z remains one of the top Android smartphones on the market. While reviewers have generally praised its design and features, criticism has been levelled at its 5-inch 1080p display, which does not offer the same degree of viewing angles seen on devices such as the HTC One. Consequently, although it is arguably Sony's best smartphone to date, it has dropped off the radar somewhat compared to the more high profile Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One.
